Summer outings: Wednesday July 16 bus to visit Gardens in Freshford Kilkenny leaving Portlaoise Parish Centre; Wednesday July 23 Visit to Limerick ‘City of Culture’ travelling by train. Included in visit will be a ’Hop-on Hop-off ‘ bus tour of the city.

Ahead of the Voices across Culture Street Market Festival Downtown Portlaoise hung about 80 hanging baskets on the Main Street. They contacted retailers and asked for a €50 contribution and Jack Nolan would install and maintain two baskets outside any retailer that takes part. Downtown wants all traders taking part. Downtown want the Main Street in bloom for the summer.
Knitting group meet on Wednesdays from 11am-1pm in Portlaoise Library. There is no charge and all levels are welcome to come along to knit and chat. Ciorcal Comhrá meet each Wednesday from 5.15pm-6.30pm.
Portlaoise Men’s Sheds at the Portlaoise Equestrian Centre Tuesday 11am-4pm and 7.30pm-10pm. Also Thursday 11am-4pm. The annual general meeting takes place at the equestrian centre on Wednesday, June 25 at 7.30pm.
Parish Youth Group
Sale of wish bags and a flag day take place on Saturday/Sunday June 28-29). Any support would be more than welcome, and greatly received by the Portlaoise Parish Youth Group has gone from strength to strength as an active force within the local community.

Hospice Coffee morning
Coffee morning in aid of Laois Hospice takes place on Friday, June 27 at their Portlaoise charity shop, Meehan Court. All donations toward palliative care services locally. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

The Arts Office, Laois County Council arts programme for children and young people in Portlaoise in St Francis NS from July 22-24. Artist Conor Brennan will run fun art workshop for children aged 7-12. During the same week young writers aged 12-15 can explore creative writing with writer Jean O’Brien. Workshops cost €20. The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive Service is seeking volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from chemoptherapy in Dublin. Volunteers needed to pick up patients at their homes, drive them to hospital and pick them up later to bring them home. Free to patients and driver expenses covered. Support group meeting for carers takes place on Tuesday, June 24 11am-12.30pm at the Portlaoise Parish Centre. Support meetings are a great opportunity to meet other carers, share experiences while taking a break from caring.
Beladd lower mass
Change of date for annual mass at Beladd Lower. Weather permitting, the mass on the Lower Green will not be celebrated on Wednesday, June 25 next at 7pm not on Tuesday. All are welcome.
The Laois Walks Festival takes place from July 1-31 next. 9km walk at the Rock of Dunamaise at 7.30pm on Saturday 9km.

Late John Sweeney
Portlaoise CBS past pupils of the late 1950s will learn with regret of the death, on March 10, of John Sweeney of Oakwell, Richardstown, Kildangan, Co Kildare. A Donegal man, he began teaching in Portlaoise at the early age of 19. As he often mused, he wasn’t much older than his students. Kindly and dedicated to his profession, he treated all boys equally, regardless of social class, and he was before his time in his concern for the welfare of the more vulnerable. John’s funeral took place to St Brigid’s cemetery, Ballinakill, on March 12. Predeceased by his wife Helena (a native of Ballinakill), he is survived by sons Brian, Conor and Barry, family and friends. Belated condolences to the family.
