Would you be interested in telling others in the community more about your activities? Would you like to increase your membership? The organisers of the Solas festival would like to offer this opportunity to community groups in the area by organising a show-and-tell on June 21 to coincide with the Solas Festival at Heritage House. The National Parents Council are hosting a training session in Scoil Mhuire on Monday June 15 at 8pm for all parents of primary and post-primary children. The session will enable parents to support their children regarding issues of bullying and inform them of the anti-bullying procedures for primary and post-primary schools. It is open to all parents and is free.

1916 centenary

Grants are now available for community groups and organisations planning to organise events or projects relating to the Centenary of the 1916 Rising. The Ireland 2016 Laois Community Grants are being administered by Laois County Council, with funding and support from Ireland 2016, part of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Detail of grants including application forms and criteria are on the website of Laois County Council at The closing date for receipt of completed applications is 12 June 2015.


A meeting was held on 2 June and 16 members attended. The President, Yvonne Porter, opened the meeting with a prayer and My Land. Alice Reilly read the minutes of the May meeting. Pat O’ Halloran gave the treasurer’s report. Yvonne Porter read the report from the National AGM which was held in Portlaoise. The Federation meeting will be held in Clonaslee on June 24 at 8pm. A walk in aid of the Cuishle Centre will take place on June 28 and will leave the centre at 2pm. Your support will be appreciated.

Abbeyleix Library will commence an adult Chess Club on Thursday June 11 at 6.15pm. All are welcome. Admission is free. Please contact the library at 057-8730020 if you are interested in participating.


Abbeyleix Tidy Towns weekly clean ups continue with gusto. This years clean ups will be project based so if you are interested in getting involved and have an hour to spare, why not drop by and speak with any of the Tidy Town volunteers or turn out on Tuesday nights to help out.


This is the last opportunity to catch the exhibition by art department students of Abbeyleix Further Education Centre in the Dunamaise Theatre as it closes on June 13. Call in to see the fantastic artworks and support the very talented local artists.

Abbeyleix Tennis Club will begin Saturday morning coaching for ages 4-12 on June 13 from 10am to 1pm. There are social nights weekly for advanced adults, beginners and teenagers. Supervised teenage tennis with coaching is on every Friday night from 7.30pm. Adult beginners nights with coaching is every Wednesday from 7.30pm. The AGM of Abbeyleix Heritage Company was held in Heritage House on Wednesday June 3. The officers for 2015 are Chairperson Brian Maher, Secretary Mary White, Treasurer Tom Lawlor. The appointed Auditor gave his report on the annual accounts and the Company are pleased to state that the financial situation is much improved. The Board thank all their supporters over the year and look forward to the many events planned for the coming year.


A comic making workshop for children from 6-12 years will take place in the Library on Friday July 24 at 2.30pm. Admission is free and booking is essential.

Storytelling with Leslie for 3-6 year olds continues each Saturday morning at 11.30am.

Juvenile chess club on Saturday mornings at 10am.

The knitting club meets on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Members and non-members are welcome.

Abbeyleix Library offers many services including: adult, young adult and children lending, audio books, language learning resources and reference books, large print fiction, internet and wifi and photocopying. It also has a study section and leisure reading area.

Names are currently being taken for German language classes with a native German speaker which costs €50 for 8 weeks. It will be taught through words, games, jigsaws and songs and will allow children to experience the language before making choices for junior and leaving cert. A mid-summer market and mini festival will be held on Sunday June 21 in the grounds of Heritage House, Abbeyleix. The market and festival will have something for people of all ages with bouncy castles for the kids, music, entertainment and market stalls.
