A protest in Portlaoise in 2021 against attacks by Israel on Palestine.
Laois people are being invited to show their solidarity with Palestine in a nationwide day of protest this Friday, May 31.
The public are asked to gather and fly their flags for Palestine on two M7 motorway bridges on either side of the Portlaoise exits.
One meeting point is at the bridge on Junction 15 to Mountmellick, beside the Gandon Inn at 5.30pm.
The second is the motorway bridge at Junction 17 (beside the Midway / Maldron) throughout the day from 7.30am until 7pm.
Emily Barrett is part of the Laois branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign, who are organising the local event.
"On Friday, May 31 people from the 32 counties of Ireland will fly the Palestinian flag in solidarity with the people of Palestine. This initiative started in Cork and Kildare and the purpose is to show the Irish government that we stand with Palestine and we want the Irish government to do everything in their power to end the genocide now," she explained to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.
There will be Bridgils - Bridge Vigils - held at over 60 locations across Ireland on Friday as part of a nationwide protest that is calling on Ireland to impose sanctions on Israel and ask it to end its attacks on Gaza that have resulted in over 36,000 deaths.
Ireland formally recognised Palestine as a state this week, and the Palestinian flag has been raised at the Dáil in solidarity.
