Arts, Heritage & Culture Winners

The Irish Steam Preservation Society has won the Arts, Culture and Heritage Award at the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards 2024.

This award recognises groups and organisations who enhance their local areas, by conserving, protecting and promoting the Arts, Culture and Heritage of their local community through collective creative activities.

The Irish Steam Preservation Society has been in existence for almost 60 years. The society is responsible for holding the annual National Steam Rally in Stradbally and is the home to the oldest Narrow Gage Railway.

Irish Steam Preservation Society Rally Secretary Kim McNamara, Company Secretary Nicola Glynn and Chairman Nigel Glynn were thrilled with their win at the awards.

“It is great to accept an award on behalf of all of the volunteers because we wouldn’t have got this award without all of their very hard work and dedication that they put into the society. Hours upon hours upon hours of work goes into creating the rally, creating our Santa train experience. There are so many volunteers and none of it would be possible without them,” Nicola said.

“All their hard work pays off and everyone has such a love for the society. Everyone puts their heart and soul into it and nobody expects anything in return. It’s just to see the joy on kids faces, our elderly patrons who come and visit us every year, the amount of tourism we bring into Laois because of everything we do, it is phenomenal,” she added.

The group received a Galway Crystal Trophy and prize money of €500 which was presented by the Interim Chief Executive of Laois County Council Mr Simon Walton.

The Runner-up in this category was Timahoe Male Choir which received prize-money of €250. MORE BELOW PICTURE.
