Simon Walton, Interm CEO, Laois County Council.
The dedication of Laois' volunteers is 'truly commendable', Interim Chief Executive of Laois County Council, Simon Walton said at this year's Gala awards.
He said it was a great pleasure to celebrate and acknowledge the remarkable work of the voluntary sector in Laois and offered his heartfelt congratulations to all those nominated for their "unwavering commitment to community and voluntary activities".
"Your significant contributions enhance our quality of life at both the local and county levels, and in many cases, even beyond our borders," said Mr Walton.
"Volunteering is not always easy. In today’s fast-paced world, time is a precious commodity that we all seem to have less of.
"Yet, volunteers like you consistently make time—whether it’s for fundraising, helping neighbours, or organising local events that brings local pride and attract visitors. Your dedication and the successes that arise from your efforts are truly commendable.
"I would like to join the Cathaoirleach, Laois Public Participation Network, and our corporate sponsor People First Credit Union in recognizing the tremendous work of the community and voluntary sector in Laois.
"I also want to thank the organisations that supported tonight’s awards, both through sponsorship and judging the various categories especially our long-term Corporate sponsor, People First Credit Union and media partner, the Leinster Express, for their ongoing coverage and support of this event. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the efforts of the elected members and the staff of Laois County Council’s Community Section for making tonight a great success once again.
"As we celebrate this evening, I hope you take pride in your nominations and the impact you’ve made in our community. I look forward to Laois County Council continuing to work alongside you all in the future to create a vibrant and thriving County Laois," said Mr Walton.
Chairman of People First Credit Union, Clive Davis said he was honoured to stand before all those nominated and that he is someone that deeply understands the value of volunteering.
"Like many of you in this room, I, too, have been privileged to work alongside numerous community groups through my involvement in over 20 voluntary committees. And tonight is a special celebration of that spirit—of the dedication, the time, and the heart you all put into making our community a better place to live.
"I want to congratulate each and every one of you for the incredible work you do. Our community would not be the same without the selfless efforts of volunteers like you. Whether it's organising events, running local services, or simply helping your neighbours, the impact you make is immeasurable.
"At People First Credit Union, we are proud to sponsor these Community and Voluntary Awards because they reflect everything we believe in. Just as you support our communities, we are here to support you. Nights like this wouldn’t happen without the continued support of our members—those who take out loans, open current accounts, and trust us with their financial needs," he said.
