The welcome signs in a Laois village are in the wrong place, a health study has discovered.

Ballyroan near Portlaoise recently was the subject of a study to decide how to improve and develop it for the next decade.

It found that the signs should be moved, while the Main Street through the village is going to be repainted by Laois County Council.

Fine Gael Cllr Barry Walsh asked for the works, at the November meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

"The lines on the Main Street are well faded, it would be good to see them repainted. We did a feasibility study on the health of the village for the next 10 years. One of the recommendations is to relocate signage closer to the village. Also the local Tidy Towns group want to put flowers around it and make it more welcoming," he explained.

In reply, senior engineer Wes Wilkinson said the repainting works will be carried out on the R425 Main Street. He said he will meet Cllr Walsh and review the locations for the welcome signage.
