A young Laois boy has bravely decided to shave his mullet off in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

Ten year old Martin Kelly has spent two years growing out his mullet, and will shave it all off this August.

"I’ve been growing my mullet for the past two years but in 2025, I’ve decided to shave it all off for this very important cause," Martin said.

"On the 16th of August 2025 I’ll be doing a head shave as part of Laois Relay for Life to help raise money for people affected by cancer. All the money raised stays in county Laois, which means it helps people right here in our community," he explained.

"I’m a bit nervous about the event, but I know it’s for a good cause, and I really want to make a difference," he said.

With help from his family, the young man has set up a GoFundMe page online, with a fundraiser target of €1,000.

In 2024, funds raised through the Relay For Life provided essential services to cancer patients in Laois.

There were 396 free drives for 42 cancer patients to and from treatment appointments, and 317 counselling sessions provided for those who were affected by cancer.

There were over 281 nights of night nursing care, to allow patients at the end of life to spend their final days surrounded by their loved ones.

The funding also covered 246 supportive and comforting conversations with people affected by cancer through the Irish Cancer Society's phone support line.
