Two Laois cemeteries in growing villages are to be extended, with the purchase of lands by Laois County Council.

The local authority has agreed land deals in Timahoe and in Camross, while other council owned cemeteries are getting new infrastructure.

Small grants are also being distributed to 23 cemetery committees around the county for maintenance work, totalling €11,320.

The update came at the September council meeting.

Timahoe cemetery is to get a new entrance and space for 44 more graves.

"Approval has been given for the purchase of an area of 0.0467 ha. This process has begun, and the necessary paperwork has been lodged with the Property Management Section, for the transfer of the land into Laois County Council’s name.

"The advantage of purchasing this land is it will provide Laois County Council with a permanent working entrance to carry out works within the cemetery as required as access through the existing entrance can be restricted to funerals only. It will also provide Laois County Council with an additional 44 grave spaces which will yield a revenue stream of est €13,200," the council reports.

The narrow entrance to Camross cemetery is also being addressed.

"Approval has also been given for the acquisition of land from Mrs. Pauline Bergin which includes an area of 0.0353ha and also an area of 37 sq metres from the Ossory Diocesan Trust. The acquisiton of both these parcels of land will allow for a new access road to the new area of the cemetery be provided by extending the existing access road and providing a turning parking area. The process has begun with the relevant paperwork lodged with the Property Management Section," the council reported.
