Gymnastics club starting up in the Owenass Hall with gymnastic classes that will range from recreational classes for beginners to elite training for gymnasts who compete nationally and internationally. Gymnastics is a very important sport for children as it is one of the three core sports included in the Sports Council’s long-term athlete development plan along with swimming and athletics. Mountmellick Special Olympics will hold a table quiz in The Hollow Bar on Friday June 29 at 9.30pm with quiz master Michael Linehan. All support appreciated.

The summer outing to the Japanese Gardens and Newbridge Silver, including a meal, takes place on Sunday July 1. The cost of €25 per person includes the bus and dinner. ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
The next group meeting will be held in the MDA at 10.30am on Wednesday June 27 when a member of Portarlington ARA will talk to us about digital photography, so bring your cameras and ask your questions.
It has been decided to hold two meetings in July on Wednesday July 11 and Wednesday July 25 and no meetings in the month of August.
Whites Hotel in Wexford is the destination of this year’s annual holiday from Sunday September 9 to Friday September 14. A special bus will bring us to Wexford on Sunday and back to Mountmellick on Friday. Payments for this holiday will be collected during the next 3 meetings.
The computer courses will finish on Friday June 22.
Thanks to all those who helped out at our stand at the festival of the mountain in Rosenallis at the weekend. There will be a general meeting this Friday June 29 at 8.30pm in the Macra hall.
Sunday July 15 is Matt Talbot day in Knock shrine. The mid region and our own council are very proud to have St Joseph’s church choir, with organist Audrey Whelan, singing on that day. Other members of the region will also take part in the celebration of mass.
Two buses will travel, one of which will take the choir. Departure times: Mountmellick 8am, Portlaoise 8.30am and Mountrath 9am. Those who wish to travel should contact their council’s secretary with Mountmellick secretary Sheila Kearney to be informed of final numbers travelling.
The library is setting up a board game club for 10 to 12 year olds and if you would like to put your name down, contact the library at 057 8644572. Story time for 4 to7 year olds will take place on Thursday June 28 at 4pm.
Artist John Cullen will feature his art work in the gallery for the month of July. All are welcome. Internet access, printing, photocopying and scanning facilities are available at the library.

ROCK JUVENILE GAA
Coaching for Gaelic football for girls and boys U8, U10, U12 and U14 continues at the Rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. All teams are up and running at this stage but new players are welcome and can register on Tuesdays or Thursdays, or alternatively contact the club’s juvenile secretary John Allen at 086 3264102 for more details.
U6 and U8 hurling training continues in Acragar every Monday at 6.30pm. U10 and U12 follows at 7pm, new players welcome. U6 and U8 football training is at 6pm on Thursdays.U14 football training continues at 5pm on Saturdays in Acragar.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART
Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and national champion. For details contact 085 1371842.
