Youth Work Ireland Laois are looking for volunteer leaders to work in the new Portlaoise Youth Café opening soon. This is an exciting opportunity to work as volunteer to empower and enable young people in matters that shape their lives, communities and society at large. The library is organising a summer reading challenge for primary school children called Story Lab. The challenge will run from Tuesday, July 3 until Friday, August 31. Children are asked to register for the challenge at their local library (becoming a member if they are not already) and to read six books, collecting library stamps for each one. At the end of the summer, everyone who has received their six stamps will be invited back to the library to receive their gold medal. Story Lab promises to be great fun with a pack for entrants, stickers to collect along the way and its own story and characters on the website www.story-lab.org.uk.


Portlaoise Macra held their AGM recently, following reports from all officers the outgoing president Michelle Brophy presided over the election of officers. The next exhibition in The Space opens this Thursday in unit 6/7 at Laois Shopping Centre. Life:Map will bring you on an interactive journey through different stages of life and will feature original poetry by writer David Delaney, housed in installations specifically created for the event by artist Jayne Louise Kelly. The exhibition invites the public to look at life through different perspectives from early childhood onward. This pop-up exhibition lasts for four days. Laois BirdWatch meeting on Wednesday, June 27. Look back at some photographs of the recent trip to Wexford and to listen to a local speaker on an aspect of the bird life of Laois. The meeting will be at the Portlaoise Parish Centre starting at 8pm. It is open to everyone with an interest in birds, and entry is free of charge. Condolences to the family of the late Jim Finn of Kyle, The Ridge, Portlaoise who passed away peacefully in his 98th year on June 21 in the loving care of his family and carers at the Ballard Lodge Nursing Home, Portlaoise. Beloved husband of the late Kathleen Jim is sadly missed by his loving family Richie, Jimmy, Sheila Brady, Tommy, Pat, John, Michael, Christy and Mary Holland extended family, neighbours and friends. Reposed at his son Christy’s residence at Kyle with removal to SS Peter and Pauls Church, for funeral mass followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery. Condolences to the family of the late Paddy McEvoy of Cosby Ave, Fairgreen who passed away on June 15 following a tragic accident. Loving husband and best friend to Carol and dearly loved father to Keith, Alan, and Niall Paddy is also deeply regretted sister Cora, father-in-law Noel, mother-in-law Phyllis extended family, colleagues in the Prison Service, relatives and friends. Condolences to the family of the late Patrick Bennett of Coolnamona, Portlaoise who passed away peacefully at The Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore on June 23. Beloved husband of the late Peggy and loving father to Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, Anthony and Joe he is also deeply regretted by brothers, sisters extended family, neighbours and friends. Removal from his son Joe’s residence to arrive St Fintan’s Church, Ballyfin followed by burial last Monday in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
