Gymnastics club starting up in the Owenass Hall with gymnastic classes that will range from recreational classes for beginners to elite training for gymnasts who compete nationally and internationally. Gymnastics is a very important sport for children as it is one of the three core sports included in the Sports Council’s long term athlete development plan alongwith swimming and athletics. If you are interested in joining or taking part in gymnastics please contact Mary on 086 7914933, All are welcome.


Mountmellick Comhaltas had many successes at the Laois fleadh in Clonaslee at the weekend. On Saturday three grupaí cheoil made their way to the Leinster Fleadh in Enniscorthy in July. Both the u12s and u15s came first and the u18s came second in their respective competitions. Also to the delight of all, our younger u12 group came third in the grupaí cheoil. The u12 and u15 ceilí bands came third in their competitions. On Sunday there were individual successes from Sadhbh Ní Riain (1st harp u12), Fiachra Ó C-Fionnghai l (3rd mandolin un15), Conor de Faoite (3rd piano u12), Darragh Ó Riain (3rd, Fiddle Airs u12), Mairéad Keogh (3rd flute airs, u15), Sadhbh Ní Riain (2nd harp airs u12), Líadan, Fiachra, Cathal, Ruaidhrí Ó C-Fhionnghaill (gold in Comhrá u13, u15 and u18). Well done to everyone and the best of luck in Enniscorthy.


The Mountmellick area track and field competition will be held on May 30 (and not 23 as previously stated) in Smith’s Field at 7pm. A sale in aid of St Paul’s parish is being held on Saturday May 26 from 11am to 1pm in the old parochial school Pearse Street. There will be all the usual stalls including plants, cake stall and bottle stall, raffle and tea available.


The annual pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Saturday May 26 with the bus leaving the square at 9am. The bus will travel through Clonaghadoo. All head sponsors and sponsors are expected to attend. Fare adult €15, child €10. Please contact Michael Lawlor at 057 8644197.


Kickboxing classes are held in the Macra hall each week. Classes are as follows: children’s lessons are on Monday and Thursday from 5pm to 6pm and adult classes are on Tuesday and Thursday from 8pm to 9.30 pm. Mountmellick Macra is holding a table quiz for children from 3rd to 6th classes on the Wednesday May 30. The quiz will take place in the Macra hall from 7pm to 9pm and a team of four children with one adult will cost €10. We would greatly appreciate you support.

The Rock GAA juvenile section will hold a table quiz in Turley’s Bar on Friday May 25 at 9.30am sharp. Table of 4 is €40 with prizes for first, second and third places of €80, €40 and €20 respectively. All welcome.

ROSENALLIS ATHLETICS CLUB Rosenallis athletics training continues every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm in Johnsgrove Rosenallis.


Coaching for Gaelic football for girls and boys U8, U10, U12 and U14 continues at the Rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. MOUNTMELLICK GAA U6 and U8 hurling training continues in Acragar every Monday at 6.30pm. U10 and U12 follows at 7pm, new players welcome. U6 and U8 football training is at 6pm on Thursdays.U14 football training continues at 5pm on Saturdays in Acragar.


Training for all U10 and U12 continues on Mondays at 6pm in Acragar. New members are very welcome. Further up the age groups club training continues from 16 upwards on Tuesday and Fridays.


Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach. For details contact 087 2768843.

Story time and colouring for 4 to 7 year olds with Sharon McEvoy is on Thursday May 24 from 4pm to 5pm.

An exhibition by local photographer, Aisling Weir titled ‘Be Your own Art’ will feature in the library gallery for the month of May. All are welcome.

Our knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your knitting needles and join us for a cuppa and a chat.

The next meeting of the adult book club takes place on Tuesday June5 at 11am. The book for discussion is ‘Catcher in the Rye’ by JD Salinger.


The next group meeting will be on Wednesday May 30 at 10.30am in the MDA. The festival of Bealtaine and Active Ageing is being celebrated in the month of May, so we have had some very interesting days this month so far.

We extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Mountmellick Library who gave us a coffee morning on Thursday May 10 and showed us a fascinating documentary which was made in 1901.  

Thank you also to the staff of the Mountmellick Museum who invited us to a coffee morning on Wednesday May 16 and showed us some of the historical old films that they house. 

Some of our members attended an activity day in Portlaoise, organised by Laois Sports Partnership, where they had great fun.

There are more activities to enjoy. On Wednesday May 23 from 11am to 4pm we are going to the Bloomfield Hotel in Mullingar to the ARI Midland Region Celebration of EYAAS. On Monday May 28 our own Bealtaine tea dance will be held in the Macra Hall from 2pm to 4.30pm with free admission. All are welcome.

Also during the month, the weekly activities continue. On Mondays from 3pm to 4.30pm there is dancing in Wolfe Tone Court and Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. On Tuesdays there is aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. On Wednesdays there is music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 6.15 to 7.45pm. The Art classes have now finished.

Please note that there are a only a few places left on the free computer course for our ARA being run on 3 Fridays June 1, 8 and 15 June in the MDA. 

YOUTH CLUB Mountmellick youth club is now taking new members. The club night is on Fridays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the sports complex games room. The club caters for youths age 10 to 16.
