Fun for St Peter’s

Final preparations are well under way for the annual St Peter’s Garden Fete, which will take place on Sunday, July 28 at Chestnut Grove, Borris Road, Portlaoise (opposite Forest Park) from 2pm till late. The parishioners have even more planned for this year’s Fete. Particular attention is being given to the needs of families, Entry to the Fete is a very reasonable €2 per adult (including free entry into the Gate Raffle) with free entry for children (including 1 ticket for a free go on the Bouncy Castle).

Dunamaise Arts Centre are launching a major new exhibition with a historical theme: 1919-1921, Trouble in Ireland, an exhibition by Mick O’Dea on Friday 26 July at 7pm with guest speaker Michael Parsons, member of The Heritage Council of Ireland and President of Laois Heritage Society. To tie in with the exhibition, a talk by Kevin Rafter, author of “The Quiet County: Towards a History of the Laois Brigade IRA and Revolutionary Activity in the County 1913-1923”, entitled - “Troubled Times in Laois” will be held on 22 August at 3pm in the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Portlaoise Comhaltas are presenting a Summer Seisiún at the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel, at 8.30pm each Thursday to August 8. The seisiún will include an informal segment when members of the audience may volunteer to sing, play or tell a story. Members of Comhaltas branches throughout the county will also be in attendance - admission free.

Big Houses lecture

On Wednesday, July 23 from 8pm local historian Siobhain Holland will describe and discuss the minor big houses of Laois including Sheffield House, Wilton House and Woodbrook at Portlaoise Library.


Mental Health Coffee morning in aid of the Beechhaven Day Centre takes place on Wednesday, July 31 from 10.30am at the Portlaoise Parish Centre. All are welcome.


The Portlaoise Rotary Club has launched a 700km 7 day charity cycle from La Rochelle on France’s Atlantic coast to Portlaoise in aid of the Laois Sport’s Partnership’s Sport’s Inclusion Disability Programme. The cycle takes place in September. Contact 057 8671248.

Condolences to the family of the late Annie McEvoy (née O’Brien), Parkview, Portlaoise who died on July 16 peacefully at her daughters residence. Predeceased by her husband Fintan, and son in law Eric. Deeply regretted by her beloved daughter and best friend Rose, her brother Leo, extened famliy, friends. Reposed at her daughter’s residence at Parkview with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for 11am requiem mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
