Mountmellick is the hub of a resoundingly successful nutrition project that saw it’s 4,000th cert handed out last week.
Local teen Rebecca Brophy from the YDC proudly received her cert last Thursday following completion of the ‘Healthy Food Made Easy’ course, one of five on offer by the project, which is co-ordinated by local lady Barbara Lalor, and employs ten people in the Mountmellick Development Association in Irishtown.
“Especially in a time of recession, it’s important that people know you can cook healthily on a budget. We’re very pleased with the interest and support groups have given, and we’d like to thank them,” said the co-ordinator.
The Food and Health project has been up and running for eight years and to date has delivered 306 courses to groups across Laois, Offaly and Kildare. A joint initiative between the MDA and HSE Dublin Mid Leinster, they are targeted at community groups that are cooking on a budget. The courses are subsidised, and teach a mix of nutrition theory and practical cooking, with a final visit by a nutritionist to answer any specific food queries.
“To date we have delivered courses to schools, women’s and men’s groups. active retirement, youth, traveller and carer’s groups. We want to get the word out that these courses are available to all” said Ms Lalor, who can be contacted at 057 86 44989 or firstname.lastname@example.org
