Charity cycle

Hand tools, power tools, nails, screws, timber, bicycles, go-Karts, work benches, shelving, steel, box iron, gardening tools. We can arrange collection of these. Contact 086-2624092.

Portlaoise Comhaltas are presenting a Summer Seisiún at the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel, at 8.30pm each Thursday to August 8. Members of Comhaltas branches throughout the county will also be in attendance - admission free.


There was no winner of the jackpot in the Portlaoise Parish Lotto when the numbers were drawn on July 25. Numbers: 5, 18, 24, 25. The match 3 winners won €100 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

The Portlaoise Rotary Club has launched a 700km 7 day charity cycle from La Rochelle on France’s Atlantic coast to Portlaoise in aid of the Laois Sport’s Partnership’s Sport’s Inclusion Disability Programme. The cycle takes place in September. Contact 057 8671248.

Free lunchtime concert, Wednesday, July 24, from 1.10-1.50pm at St Peter’s Church, Market Square, Portlaoise, featuring organist and 2010 Feis Ceoil winner Paul Mullen (31 July) and guest vocalist. All welcome. Bring your lunch and come and go as you please (quietly). Donations will be split between the Laois Hospice, the Dunamaise Arts Centre and St Peter’s Church.

ARchitecture talk

Castle Durrow - Nixers in the 17th Century is the name of a talk by Shelly Stokes, owner of Castle Durrow Hotel in Portlaoise Library on Tuesday, July 30 at 8pm. The free event is part Celebration of Architectures series in the library on the big houses of Laois. The next talk by Tom Cox, historian, on August 6 at 8pm focus on Abbeyleix House.


Condolences to the family of the late Julia Gorman (née O Brien) of 11 St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise, who passed away on July 21. Beloved wife of the late Martin and much loved mother of John, Martin, Gerard,Tony and daughter Patricia Molloy, sister Mary Nugent, Julia is also deeply regretted by her extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest at The Regional Hospital, Portlaoise with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for requiem mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
