Laois Friends of Midland Simon Community annual church gate collection takes place at all masses and services on Saturday and Sunday August 11 and 12. Your support would be gratefully appreciated.


Adjudication began on Monday July 30 and is being carried out by two independent people. A prize giving ceremony will be held in late September or early October. The committee wish everyone every success in their endeavours.


Mountmellick Utd FC Juveniles is holding a registration day on Saturday August 4 in Conor Davis Park clubhouse from 12pm to 2pm. All juvenile players not yet registered for the upcoming season can register on the day or register with their manager ASAP. Player registration is €25 per player plus discounts for additional family members.

The 2012/2013 Midlands Schoolboy/girls league will be kicking off on Saturday September 8. New players and coaches/managers are most welcome.


Mountmellick ladies will join the Laois Federation on Tuesday August 7 for their trip to Belfast to visit the replica of the Titanic. They will stay overnight at An Grianan.


The activities continue with Boccia in the Macra Hall on Mondays at 7.30pm, aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre on Tuesdays at noon (the free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am) and music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesdays from 6.15 to 7.45pm.

There will be no meetings during the month of August, but the Boccia on Mondays, aqua aerobics on Tuesdays and the music and song on Wednesdays will continue throughout August.


The library will be closed on Saturday August 4 for the bank holiday weekend.

‘White on White’ an exhibition of paintings by Antoinette Breen will be officially opened on Tuesday August 7 at 6pm in the gallery. All welcome to attend. The exhibition will run until the end of the month.

Mountmellick Library will host a number of events for Heritage Week. All events are free. Please check for details. Bookings are to be made directly with the library.


The Rock GAA Club will hold its annual family fun day on Sunday August 5 from 2pm to 6pm. Come along and join us for some fun by taking part in our juvenile Olympic races and football tournament along with our novelty races. Try your hand at our novelty stalls while the kids enjoy the pets in the animal corner and take a go on the bouncing castles.

The highlight this year will be the inaugural duck derby. Buy your duck for €5, name it and enter into the race in the Triogue river where the first 3 ducks past the finish line will win prizes including 2 nights B&B plus evening meal for 2 people in The Lakeside Hotel & Leisure Centre in Killaloe in Clare. All are welcome to join us on the day and admission is free.

Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps provide boys and girls with an action packed and fun filled week of activity during the summer holidays which revolves around maximizing enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic games. Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and national champion. For details contact 085 1371842.

The death took place on Saturday July 14 of Mary Costello (nee Conroy), formerly of Graigue, Mountmellick in Leicestershire England after a short illness bravely borne. Her remains were removed to St Joseph’s Convent, Rearsby on Sunday July 22 and following requiem mass on Monday July 23, her burial took place in Rearsby Churchyard.

Mary is mourned by her husband Val, sons Michael, Andrew and Peter, daughter-in-law Julie, grandchildren Joe, Connie and Isabelle, sisters Eileen (Grumley) and Ann (Hickey), brothers Jim, Peter, Joe, Christy and Liam, nieces, nephews and friends to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.
