The weekly activities continue on Mondays from 3pm until 4.30pm. Dancing continues in Wolfe Tone Court and Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. On Tuesdays there is aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Music and song are on Wednesdays in St Vincent’s Hospital from 6.15pm until 7.45pm. The art classes on Thursdays will continue until Thursday May 10.


Mountmellick youth club will be holding a registration night on Friday May 3 from 8pm until 9pm in sport complex games room. New members are welcome. Club caters for youths age 10 to 16. Cub scouts entertained the residents of Wolfe Tone Court with music, song and dance on March 22, which they followed up by serving tea and cakes and presenting each resident with a handmade box of sweets. Special thanks to Sr Eileen for allowing the group to visit. On Wednesday April 11, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts enjoyed a visit to the Curragh Army Camp where they viewed artillery and were able to sit into tanks, meet the ambulance and fire crew and visit the equine centre. The group finished off their trip with lunch in the mess. A special thanks to Noel Coss who organised the visit for us and to his colleagues at the Department of Defence who spent so much time with the group on the day making it a very educational and memorable visit.


There will be badminton and table tennis in the Macra Hall from 8.30pm for anyone interested. On Thursday April 26, there will be a general Macra meeting in the hall at 8.30pm. Please send your apologises if you can’t attend.

Friday April 27 sees the beginning of the Mr Personality Festival in the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny with the band Domino Effect performing for the night with a DJ playing afterwards till late. The entry for Friday night is €10. Eoghan O’Neill from our club will be representing Laois in this festival.

Mr Personality continues on Saturday night with a five course informal gala banquet at 7.30pm. The winner will be announced at midnight and the entertainment will be provided by Deuce’s Wild and a DJ until late. Tickets for the banquet are €30 and can be booked from Denis on 0868389401. Entrance for the Saturday night disco is only €15. Macra would like to wish the very best of luck to Eoghan.

Many thanks to the residents, who came out in spite of the rain and cold last Thursday evening for the clean up. Thanks to the council for the bags and litter pickers and for collecting the bags of litter and weeds. We appeal once again to residents and people passing through our area not to throw bottles and cigarette boxes etc out of cars. We remind people that trailers need to be covered on way to landfill as litter blows out of uncovered trailers in our area.


Coaching for Gaelic football for girls and boys U8, U10, U12 and U14 continues at the Rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. All teams are up and running at this stage but new players are welcome and can register on Tuesdays or Thursdays, or alternatively contact the clubs juvenile secretary John Allen at 086 3264102 for more details.


The Rock GAA club 5 mile road race will take place on Sunday April 29. Start time is 11am. Registration is from 10am at the Rock GAA clubhouse. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for men and women. The entry fee is €15 for adults and €10 for under 18s. U6 and U8 hurling training continues in Acragar every Monday at 6.30pm. U10 and U12 follows at 7pm, new players welcome. U6 and U8 football training is at 6pm on Thursdays.U14 football training continues at 5pm on Saturdays in Acragar. There is a table quiz this Friday night in the Hollow Bar at 9.30pm in aid of the club. All support greatly appreciated.


Mr Liam O’Neill, president of the GAA, will officially open the new club house on Friday May 11 at 7pm. A family fun day will be held on Saturday May 12 in Acragar with competitions for all juveniles in both hurling and football. The GAA roads how will also be present. It promises to be a great fun day for all.


Training for all U10 and U12 continues on Mondays at 6pm in Acragar. New members are very welcome. Further up the age groups club training continues from 16 upwards on Tuesday and Fridays.


Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach. For details contact 087 2768843.

Story time and colouring for 4 to7 year olds with Sharon McEvoy is on Thursday April 26 from 4pm to 5pm.

Local photographer, Aisling Weir will launch her photography exhibition ‘Be your own art’ on Tuesday May 1 at 6pm in the library gallery. All are welcome. Our knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your knitting needles and join us for a cuppa and a chat. The next meeting of the adult book club is on Tuesday May 1 at 11am. The book for discussion is ‘The Audacity of Hope’ by Barrack Obama.

There was much sadness at the death of the late Seamus Gorman of Graigue, Mountmellick who died peacefully at the regional hospital, Tullamore on Tuesday April 17. Removal to St Joseph’s church at 11.15. Requiem mass celebrated at noon followed by funeral and burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. Seamus is deeply regretted by his loving wife Brigid and children Shane, Michael, Lucy and Patricia and will be sadly missed by family, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom the sincere sympathy of the community is extended.
