The first citizen of Laois had the honour of welcoming guests to the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards 2025 and he used his speech to highlight the vital contributions volunteers make to everyone in the county.

Cathaoirleach, Cllr Barry Walsh, began by saying it gave him great pleasure, as Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, to join nearly 300 guests, nominees, sponsors and others in celebrating what he called “the remarkable contributions” made by the community and voluntary sector across the county.

“The nominees we honour represent a truly diverse array of groups, organisations, and individuals, each one generously offering their time, energy, and expertise for the betterment of their communities," he told the Gala event at the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise.

“Each of you brings your own unique talents, creativity, and above all, your commitment to making Laois a better place to live, work, and visit.

“This event is an opportunity to recognise your selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to community life. Through your time and hard work, you have made a real and lasting difference in the lives of your fellow citizens across every town, village, and parish in Laois.

“Your collective efforts enrich our social fabric, strengthen community bonds, and foster a spirit of inclusion and pride that defines who we are as a county,” he said. MORE BELOW PHOTO.

“The PPN serves as a vital link between community organisations and Laois County Council, ensuring that the voices of the community, voluntary, social inclusion, and environmental sectors are heard and represented in local policy-making.

“To all who volunteer their time and insight through the PPN, thank you. Your work ensures that our communities continue to have a meaningful role in shaping the future of Laois,” he said.
