The value of community spirit and volunteerism in Laois was highlighted at the gala awards by Michael Rainey the Chief Executive of Laois County Council, which hosts the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards.
It's just over a year since Mr Rainey took up the top job in County Hall. He reflected on the local volunteerism he has seen in the past twelve months at the Gala awards event at the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise.
“Over the last year I have had the honour to visit many of the communities in this county and to meet many of the community groups represented here today. What was really clear to me as I went through the year is that the community spirit in this county is alive, vibrant and thriving,” he told guests.
He spoke of the importance of the Awards as a way to acknowledge this.
“ If we as a county really believe that a strong community spirit is important, then we need to pause, take a moment and really celebrate the communities, groups and volunteers that make it all possible.

“It is always a thoroughly enjoyable night of positivity,” he said.
He took the opportunity to praise the winners and nominees.
“It would be remiss of me not to start by extending congratulations to each of you for your unwavering commitment to community and voluntary activities.
“Your significant contributions enhance our quality of life at both local and county levels, and in many cases, even beyond our borders. Regardless of the results, every group and individual nominated tonight is a winner, and Laois is a winner because of all of you. MORE BELOW PHOTO.

“In saying that, it has to be recognised that volunteering is not always easy. In today’s fast-paced world, particularly in Laois where we have over 13,000 people commuting outside the county, time is a precious commodity.
“Yet, volunteers like you consistently make time, whether it’s for fundraising, helping neighbours, or organising local events that build community pride and attract visitors. Your dedication and the successes that arise from your efforts are truly commendable,” he said.

“In particular, I want to acknowledge our long-term corporate sponsor, People First Credit Union, and our media partner, the Leinster Express, for their ongoing coverage and generous support of this event and indeed for their positive and engaging coverage throughout the year which is essential to supporting the positive spirit in this county. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the elected members and staff of Laois County Council for once again making this evening such a success,” he said.

Mr Rainey also thanked public representatives for their backing.
“I want to reflect on why the elected members of Laois County Council invest such resources in community development, Tidy Towns, Town Teams, PPNs, and residents' groups - all so important. Yes, it is great to have a great community spirit and strong community pride, but the benefits are far beyond a good feeling it is a key ingredient to the quality of life on offer in this county,” he said.
He also thanked Laois TDs for representing Laois and rural Ireland in the Dáil.
He said this supports housing, tourism, economic development, mental health, inclusivity, physical health, urban and rural regeneration and sustainability.
He concluded with a message to all the attendees.
“What you are all doing in this room is not peripheral to the work of Laois County Council; it is at the heart of what we are trying to achieve.
“Everyone in this room is not only serving their local community but serving the county. So, it is right that we are here today to celebrate community, to celebrate positivity, and to celebrate those who say yes when their community calls on them. Well done, everyone,” said the CEO.
This is the 16th year of the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards in Laois.
