Best of luck to Deirdre Ryan who is representing Ireland in the Olympics high jump in London. Deirdre is daughter of PJ and Ann formerly Ann Lalor Chapel Street Durrow. Everyone will be watching and hoping that Deirdre does herself proud. Her uncles Rev. Fr John Lalor PP Camross, Gay, her Aunt Mary with extended family and many friends around Durrow hope that we will be celebrating with a coveted Olympic medal for Deirdre.


On Friday July 27 there will be a grade C walk in Ballinakill. It will commence at 7.30pm in the square and will be 5 km approximately, followed by refreshments. On Sunday July 29 the final walk of this year’s festival will be in Durrow. Meet at the Castle Arms Hotel at 2pm for a 16 km walk on the Leafy Loop. This walk will take 3.5 hours to complete and sturdy footwear is recommended.


This is being held in conjunction with Durrow Scarecrow Festival. Throughout the festival the exhibition will be on display in the community hall. The exhibition will be open daily from Saturday July 28 to Monday August 6 between 2pm and 5pm. Appointments can be made for visiting groups outside of opening hours. A social night for senior citizens will be held on Monday July 30 in Castledurrow Hotel at 7pm which will include a walk through the Castle gardens. All senior citizens are invited to attend and evening of music, song, and refreshments will be served. Contact Mary Walsh for any queries including the organization of transport to and from the event.

Durrow Community Council is anxious to set up a support network for the elderly in our community. Volunteer names are required as soon as possible. Please contact Pat 0868096693 or Debbie 0874192077 if you would like to volunteer.

The annual day trip is due to take place on Saturday September 1. The trip will be to New Ross Co. Wexford and will include a river cruise where lunch will be served and then on to a guided tour of the Dunbrody Famine Ship. The bus will leave at 10am and return after 6pm. Places on the tour are filling up quickly and as they are limited it is advisable to book now. €20 per person is required when booking and this will guarantee your place. Durrow Development Forum present an evening with flowers in Castle Durrow starting with a walk in Castle Durrow Gardens with resident gardner Bart from 7pm and followed by a flower demonstration at 8pm with Oliver and Martin Lawlor on Wednesday August 1. Entry fee €8.


Scarecrow Festival 2012 will be launched on Saturday night July 28 with a hooley in the Castle Arms Hotel. Tickets are €10, fancy dress is optional and a great night is assured.

A buy and sell fair will be held from Monday July 30 to Friday August 3 from 2pm to 9pm. Get some extra cash by hiring a stall at €15 per day or €60 for the week.
