Derek Verso is organist and choir director at St Paul’s, Glenageary, and is an arts administrator. Bring your lunch and eat while you listen. The Laois Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association will have the formal hand over of their new bus on Friday, July 27 at 12 o’clock at Mallon’s Renault Grarage, Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise. The committee would like to invite everyone who helped with the fundraising for this project over the past two years to attend. All members of the public who generously supported the project are welcome to come and see the fully adapted bus. Tea and coffee will be served.

The Druid Art Group will be exhibiting members’ works in The:SPACE in Laois Shopping Centre over the August bank holiday weekend. The Druid Art Group in Portlaoise has existed in its present form for six years although several members had met in an earlier group. The group meets on Thursday evenings in the Methodist Church Hall. There are currently 14 regular attendees, several of whom have been attending for five years or longer.

The range of styles, like the level of experience and skill, varies widely. The group includes a highly skilled water-colourist who has taught painting professionally as well us self-taught hobbyists. All enjoy the challenge of applying paint to a surface in order to create meaningful visual images.


‘An Evening with Mick and Friends’ in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel takes place this Friday, July 27. The fundraiser promises a big night of sport, music and friendship on Friday July 27 in Portlaoise Heritage Hotel from 8.30pm. The evening will include a presentation of golf classic prizes, an auction of sports memorabilia to include items such as autographed rugby and GAA shirts, golf 4 balls and other items of interest to all sports enthusiasts and beyond. A 5 mile fancy dress walk or cycle for Barnardos takes place on Sunday, July 29 at Kilminchy Court Portlaoise from 2.30pm. Street entertainers, facepainting, clowns, BBQ with music from Na Fianna. Prizes for best dressed child and adult.

The Laois Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals appeal for donations of saleable items to sell in their shop at 2 Hynds Sq. Portlaoise. All proceeds from the sale of items goes towards helping the animals in our care. The 40th annual Portlaoise parish pilgrimage to Lourdes begins next Tuesday making it one of the longest established and most successful parish pilgrimages to the well known grotto. A group of 72 pilgrims will begin their journey with mass in the parish church at 8.15am next Tuesday morning. They will be accompanied by Msgr John as their spiritual director.


Having walked 165km of the ancient Camino route the group reached Santiago de Compostela safely on Tuesday July 17 in good spirits and lifted hearts and with no casualties and with a new found love of walking. Congrats to all.

There was no jackpot winner in the Portlaoise parish Lotto when the numbers were drawn on Thursday, July 19. The numbers drawn were 4,7,14,17. The 25 match 3s re ceive €40 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.


Again this year the diocesan changes involve our own parish. Fr Jimmy O’ Reilly has been recalled by his Missionary Society, St Patrick’s Kiltegan. He will be replaced by Fr Paddy Byrne, currently CC, Bagnalstown. Monsignor Brendan Byrne PP, Tullow and diocesan administrator to retire as PP, Tullow and continue on as diocesan administrator.


Condolences to the family of the late Michael Kinsellsof 52 The Green, Kilminchy, Portlaoise, formerly of Athy, Ballyroan and Munny, Stradbally. Reposed at his home with removal last Friday to the Sacred Heart Church, Stradbally for funeral mass at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in Oakvale Cemetery.
