Meree O'Sullivan (Toastmaster) welcomed everyone to the rcent gathering of Portlaoise Toastmasters. S he encouraged us to enjoy ourselves. There were three speeches. Donal Mooney informed us about his 16k walk for Laois Hospice on Stephen Day. He described his preparations, the friends he met, the landscape, beautiful even when so wet and overcast and his fondness for Daisy, his dog. Donal, in particular, savoured the soup and rolls provided, and extolled the Clonaslee Christmas cake as being always the best.

Donal Cahill delivered a speech on the art and craft of impromptu speaking. He highlight that impromptu speaking occurs regularly in every day live, at an interview, or in the fun setting of Toastmasters. Listening, taking time to gather one’s thoughts and putting them together in an orderly manner are essential requirements. He shared some tips on how to be relaxed using witty examples from his own public speaking experience.

Bryan Holland presented a lively Table Topics. Bryan used an inventive and fun approach to encouraging people to speak spontaneously from the floor using open ended sentences letting people say what was on their minds. This led to many fun exchanges about things as diverse as teeth, finger nails, snow, the winter’s floods and the benefits of living in a landlocked county. Overall another great meeting . Next meeting January 25 8pm in the Killeshin Hotel
