Credit Union quiz
Primary schools from Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Ballinakill and surrounding common bond areas of Portlaoise Credit Union have been invited to participate in the first stage of the nationwide 2016 Credit Union Schools Quiz competition, being run by Portlaoise Credit Union in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Monday, Feb 1 at 7.30pm.
Poeople Over Wind
People over Wind public meeting in Ballyroan Community Hall on Monday, January 25 at 8pm. Locals will be given an opportunity to learn about new giant wind farms planned for Ballyroan and will be updated on the campaign to save Cullenagh Mountain from Coillte's wind farm.
Heywood CS, Ballinakill will hold their annual enrolment night for prospective first year students and their parents/guardians on Thursday January 21 at 7pm on the school sports hall.
Abbeyleix Bog Project are holding their first conservation work group of the year and are looking for volunteers. It will be begin on Saturday January 30 at 10am, meeting in the Manor Hotel car park beside the bog entrance at 9.45am. This will involve a variety of vital work including Rhododendron removal and repair work to the track which was damaged during the recent spell of bad weather. Volunteers are requested to bring a packed lunch, tea and biscuits will be provided as usual. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather and site conditions (wellies recommended). The Laois branch of Arthritis Ireland will run gentle Zumba classes in St Mary's Hall, Old Dublin Road, Portlaoise starting on Tuesday January 26 from 6-7pm. The first night is free. The Raheen Panto group presents their 29th annual pantomime 'Sinbad the Sailor' in the James Fintan Lalor Memorial Hall, Raheen on Thursday January 21 to Sunday January 24 at 8pm nightly. There are also matinees on Saturday January 23 and Sunday January 24 at 3pm. Admission is €10 for adults, €7 for children and OAPs.
Set dancing classes in Heritage House continue on Monday nights in Heritage house from 7.30pm to 9pm. The classes are great fun and good exercise, especially after the Christmas excesses. MODEL RAILWAY CLUB
The next meeting of the junior model railway club takes place in Heritage House on Saturday January 23 from 10am to 1pm. Come along and help transform the new layout and learn how to put down tracks, make models and how the electrics of a real model railway layout operate.
Annual awards night for adult and junior members will take place on Friday February 12. The juniors will play their normal tennis on the night and awards will start at 9pm. Hot food to be served and it promises to be a great night for all the members.
Abbeyleix library is looking for children's storytelling volunteers and volunteers interested in running an adult book club. If interested contact the library at 057-8730020.

Artist Elga Haaf will exhibit from January 8 until February 5 2016 and her work includes still life, portraits and abstract paintings. Her exhibition will launch in the Library on Thursday January 14 at 6pm.From February 9 until March 5 artist Jelena Straiziene will exhibit oil and acrylic on canvass paintings in the Library art gallery. Eadrom Art class for 6 to 12 year olds will begin shortly and the next class will be announced here and on the Laois Libraries website.
Junior chess club continues every Saturday morning at 10am. The knitting Club also continues at 10.30am each Wednesday. Historian Daire Keogh will present a talk on 'Our Boys' magazine and the New Ireland in Abbeyleix Library. This will be part of Laois Libraries 1916 Centenary Commemoration programme. The date for this talk has to be arranged and will be announced shortly. All are welcome and admission is free. Abbeyleix Library offers many services including: adult, young adult and children lending, audio books, language learning resources and reference books, large print fiction, internet and wifi and photocopying. It also has a study section and leisure reading area.

Condolences to the family of the late Paddy Mills, Portlaoise Road, Abbeyleix, who died on January 8. Husband of the late Helen.
