Next Wednesday 10 February is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Ashes will be blessed and distributed at 7.30 p.m. Mass in Borris-in-Ossory. There will be no morning Mass in Borris-in-Ossory on that day.
Ashes will be distributed in Knockaroo at 10 a.m. and in Kllasmeestia at 10.30 a.m.
Beginning on Thursday February 11, for the whole of LENT, there will be Evening Mass every evening at 7.30 p.m. in Borris-in-Ossory (except Monday evening). This is to facilitate parishioners who would like to attend Mass during Lent. There is no morning Mass in Borris-in-Ossory during LENT except on Saturday at 10 a.m.
There will be a Healing Service and Mass with Eddie Stone on Friday February 19 at 7.30 p.m. in Borris-in-Ossory Church.
The last monthly meeting of Borris-In-Ossory ICA guild took place on Wednesday February 3, presided over by Margaret Jestin. A vote of sympathy was passed with the family of the late George Roe, Skeirke, Ballybrophy. George’s late wife, Anne was a dedicated member for many years and George took a great interest in the guild and supported all its activities. Sympathy was also extended to the family of the late Lorna Allen, Cromogue, Mountrath who passed away at Christmas time. The late Lorna and her grandmother travelled with Borris-In-Ossory ICA on several holidays throughout Ireland, north and south, and also to Cardiff in Wales.
A new member, Margaret Ryan, was welcomed to the meeting and a visitor from Roscrea was also welcomed.
It is hoped to have a course of armchair Pilates with Julie Maguire, starting on Wednesday March 9.
The guest speaker at the meeting was Carol Stanley from Rathdowney who spoke to the members about her trip to India last summer. Carol and her daughter Claire went to India as part of an Irish Girl Guide Volunteer Project. Their work included teaching English, promoting and encouraging healthcare for women and children and helping to upgrade community centres. Carol gave a most interesting talk and showed pictures of her experiences and she also showed the members some traditional Indian garments and materials which she brought back.
The Federation Table Quiz will be held in Spink on Wednesday February 24 and the guild hopes to enter two teams.
Fran Dowing and the team of FAS workers were complimented on all the work completed in St Canice’s Hall.
The competition for the nicest calendar was won by Mary Sheeran, 2nd Rosie Kealy, 3rd Florrie Foley and the raffle winners were Anne O’Sullivan and Margaret Ryan. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday March 2 and the competition will be the nicest St. Patrick’s Day Card.
Borris in Ossory Ladies Football Club will hold a Presentation evening on Saturday 20 February in St Joseph’s National School at 6pm, all are welcome to attend. The Annual General Meeting is to be held on Monday evening February 22 at 7.30pm in the FAS office. We would encourage that at least one parent from each family attend the AGM.

Sympathy is extended to the Egan and Coyne families Borris in Ossory on the death of their niece the late Brídín Mulhall, Rathmines and formerly of Main Street, Ballyroan, Co. Laois. Her death took place on 28 January 2016, peacefully after a long illness bravely fought. Her remains reposed at her family home in Ballyroan until removal on Monday morning February 1 to St. Patrick's Church Ballyroan for Funeral Mass, followed by burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
The late Brídín is deeply regretted by her parents Seamus and Ursula, brothers John, James and Gerard., aunts and uncles, Sr Kay and Sr. Patricia Mulhall, Eamonn and Evelyn, Sr. Gerard Egan, Sean and Elizabeth, Frances and Michael, cousins and wide circle of friends.
SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY
The annual parish Senior Citizens Party, organised by Borris-In-Ossory Social Services will be held on this Sunday February 14 in the PE Hall at St Joseph’s National School, Borris-In-Ossory. The party will start at 12.30pm with lunch being served at 1 o’clock and this will be followed by music, song and dance. All Senior Citizens in the parish are invited to this party.

Laois teachers in primary and second level schools, whose pupils take part in the annual Texaco Children’s Art Competition, are reminded that the closing date for receipt of entries this year is Monday, 29th February next. Last year 121 pupils from schools in Co. Laois submitted entries to the Competition.
