The Parade is going ahead with a new committee. Meeting point at Turleys Pub, Harbour St, at 1.30pm, starts at 2pm. A big effort is asked from businesses and community groups. Meeting in the Druid tonight at 9pm.

The Community Care monthly social is on Thursday March 10 at 8.30pm in Wolfe Tone court. New people are invited to join in for refreshments and entertainment.


Daffodil Day is on Friday March 11. This is the main fundraiser of the Irish Cancer Society and funds raised go directly to the society for use in cancer research and the care and assistance of those living with cancer. Volunteers are needed in Mountmellick on the day and any donations of fresh daffodils for sale would be greatly appreciated. Anyone available to help on the day or who can donate fresh daffodils please contact Bridie on 086 2065720 or Mary on 8624758. All support is greatly appreciated.

This year Sarsfields LFC celebrates its 21st anniversary. Events include a 21st dinner dance on March 20 (tickets on sale soon), a Gaelic4Girls programme for primary school pupils and a golf classic on Friday May 27 in Garryhinch.


Next meeting is Wednesday March 9 at 10.30am in the MDA when we will have a guest speaker talking with regard to deafness and we will also be completing arrangements for our trip on Friday night March 11. Mountmellick Library will exhibit ‘Conradh na Gaeilge 1916’ throughout March in the gallery. This mobile exhibition is based on the documents in Conradh na Gaeilge’s collection. It details the role the Irish Language movement played in Irish history and in the lives of the leaders of the Easter Rising. 

Join in the free Family History Research day on Tuesday March 8 at 11am to 4pm. Experts from Findmypast and Eneclann will answer genealogy enquiries . 

The adult colouring group is proving very popular. It meets each Thursday morning at 10.30am. Colours and pages provided.

The club thanks all who contributed to making the recent 'Strictly Come Dancing' event such a huge success, and hopes all had a great night's entertainment. The funds raised will go towards the continued development of the club.


The Annual Mission Alive church gate collection is on Saturday and Sunday March 12 & 13 in Mountmellick and Clonaghadoo. Your support would be appreciated. All proceeds from the collection will go to the Orphan Project in Lusaka in Zambia. The group recently made a presentation to Sr Maureen O'Connell on her departure from Mountmellick. Sr Maureen, together with the late Sr Imelda Carew, founded the Mission Alive Group in Mountmellick and the group thanked her for all her work and wished her well as she heads to Tralee in her native Kerry.

1916 ceremony

The Mountmellick commemoration of 1916 to 2016 is on Sunday April 3 at 3pm at Derrycloney Bridge. Gather at Applegreen petrol station at 2pm to parade to Derrycloney, leaving at 2.30pm. The parade will be led by UN Veterans Post 27 and Mountmellick Pipe Band. At Derrycloney seven oak trees will be planted, a commemorative stone unveiled, wreaths laid and the Irish flag raised. Refreshments at 4pm in Moloney’s with trad music at 7pm in the bar. Call 086 6836144.
