Condolences to the family of the late Philomena Dowling, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin / Abbeyleix who died peacefully on March 12 in the kind care of the Carysfort Nursing Home. Bloved sister of Bridget, Josephine and Kathleen sadly missed by extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed in Dun Laoghaire. Removal to St Joseph's Church, Glasthule for funeral Mass. Burial Raheen Cemetery.


The Raheen 1916 remembrance garden committee are holding a 'hooley on the hill' fundraiser at Eamon a' Chnoic's in Raheen on Saturday March 26 at 9pm. There will be a variety of artists performing with something for everyone and a raffle on the night. All proceeds go to the upkeep of the 1916 remembrance garden.

1916 Film

Abbeyleix Heritage Company will be showing their 1916 commemoration film on the memoires of Nurse Mary O' Shea on Easter Saturday March 26 at 4pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

1916 in Laois

The Laois Heritage Society presents On Thursday March 24 at 8pm in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, Dr Regina Uí Collatáin, PhD, will speak about ‘The Laois Links to 1916’ which is a very interesting, well-informed and topical theme for this centenary year. Regina is head of the Department of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore in University College Dublin and has contributed to many programmes on TV and Radio.

The Mountmellick Republican Centenary Committee are requesting help from the people of Laois in compiling a list of Laois Cumann na mBan members for a display on Easter Monday, March 28. Kieran Mono Monahan Memorial fund. An evening of music and dancing will be held in the Castle Arms Hotel, Durrow on Friday April 8 at 9pm featuring country and western singing sensation Robert Mizzell among others. Set dancing classes in Heritage House continue on Monday nights from 7.30pm to 9pm. The classes are great fun and good exercise. 1916 COMMEMORATION EVENTS: Michael Moylan will present a '1916 Irish History Live Show' in the library on Saturday May 28 at 11.30am.

Children of 8-13 years are welcome to attend including pupils from local National Schools.

Historian Dr. Elaine Sisson will present a talk on Patrick Pearse and the educational philosophy of St. Enda's School in Abbeyleix Library on Thursday May 12 at 6pm.

Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

Dr. Daire Keogh will present a lecture entitled 'Our Boys Magazine and the New Ireland' in the library on Thursday May 19 at 6pm. Again admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

From 8th March until 2nd April Inguna Mainule will exhibit textile, oil and acrylic work in our library gallery.

A juvenile book club for children aged 9-12 commences Tuesday 1st March at 4pm.

Storytelling for 3-7 year olds with Grace Kavanagh commences on Saturday March 5 at 11am.

There will be an evening of traditional music, storytelling and dance for Seachtain na Gaeilge with Spink Ceolamhtas on Thursday March 10 at 6pm.

Spanish Classes for adults are currently taking place and French Classes for adults begin on April 14 at 6pm in the library. Booking is essential. Tel: 057-8730020.

The junior chess club continues every Saturday morning at 10am and the knitting club at 10.30am each Wednesday.

Abbeyleix Library offers many services including: adult, young adult and children lending, audio books, language learning resources and reference books, large print fiction, internet and wifi and photocopying. It also has a study section and leisure reading area.
