Laois friends of Midland Simon Community are holding a church gate collection in all churches in Laois on Saturday/Sunday, August 13-14.
The problem of homelessness is very much evident in every community and Laois is no exception.
All funds raised will go directly towards alleviating homelessness within county Laois.

Summer fun run
Borris-In-Ossory Community Development (Tidy Towns) Association
The Summer Fun Run was held recently and was an outstanding success.
The day started at 1-30pm when around 20 Cyclists from Borris-In-Ossory, Roscrea, and Mountrath along with some from Rathdowney based group Ossory Cycling Club set off on their cycle heading to Roscrea, onto the Obama Plaza in Moneygall and returning to Borris-In-Ossory taking in about 28km approx.
Next off were Vintage Cars of all makes and ages at 2pm.
Then the Vintage Tractors and not so Vintage! set off, there were tractors of all makes and descriptions, Runners, Walkers and Amateur Cyclists then went on their 7.5Km route, a shorter children’s walk was also completed.
All who took part were entertained with refreshments in St Joseph’s School Hall.
The Cake Sale took place in the Hall also and was a great success.
Another feature of the day was a Crushed car with all its identification features removed.
There were many guesses as to the make and model of the car, but no correct one. Ronan Kelly and David Gray guessed the correct weight and received €25 each.
Guess the name of the Beautiful Doll was also a popular event on the day. Annabelle was her name. There were four correct answers and David St Ledger was the lucky winner.
There were many attractions in the school field which were very popular and successful.
These included, Bouncing Castles, Wheel Of Fortune, Lucky Dip, Childrens races and the old reliable Sack, Wheelbarrow and Egg and Spoon races.

Rathdowney Golf Club Restauraunt (Hanrahans) Voucher - Paddy Delaney, Gala Roscrea Voucher and Steamer - Mary O’Connor,
Mullallys Electrical Voucher and Toaster - Edmund Sheeran, Whiskey - Declan Barry, Wine - Breda Delaney, Frame and Wine - Tim Keenan, Frame and Chocolates - Sean Ryan, Wine - Abe Moynan, Set of Mugs - Louise Delaney.
The day concluded with a Celebration Barn Dance at Kelly’s bar with music by ‘Ryan’s Daughter’.
Evelyn Reid won the €50 Door Prize.

It was a great enjoyable day and also brought in much needed funds for the maintenance of our local Village and surrounds.
We also wish to thank all who helped out on the day, Stewards, ticket sellers and helpers, Kelly’s Bar, Borris-In-Ossory ICA and Social Services, all who helped with catering in the hall and in Kelly’s.
Also Kevin Horgan and Fr Jackie Robinson for the use of St Josephs School and the Church Grounds.
The monthly Parish Social will take place in Killasmeestia Community Centre on this Friday night August 19 with music by Peter Burke.
Dancing will be from 9.30pm to 12.30am and supper will be served.
BALLYQUAID MASS PIT
The annual Mass at the Mass Pit in Ballyquaid, Ballybrophy will be celebrated on Monday evening August 15, the feast of the Assumption at 7.30pm.
This ancient and historic place of worship was restored eleven years ago and the annual Mass serves to remind us of the sacrifices and risks made by our ancestors in order to attend Mass during Penal times.
Please note that there will be no morning Mass in Killasmeestia Church on that day.
LATE PAt KENNEDY
The death took place on August 4, peacefully at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise following a short illness of Patrick (Paddy) Kennedy, Shannon St., Mountrath (formerly of Irish Life).
His remains reposed at Burke's Funeral Home Mountrath until removal to St. Fintan's Church, Mountrath on Friday evening.
Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday morning 6th August, followed by burial in St. Fintan's Cemetery, Mountrath.
The late Paddy was predeceased by his beloved wife Moira (nee Kennedy, Killasmeestia), he is deeply regretted by his sister Maisie, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand and great-grandnieces and nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.
The 2016 pilgriamge to Knock will take place on Thursday, August 25.
