Retired Nurses

The Laois Offaly branch of the retired nurses organisation will hold a meeting on Monday 12th Sept in the SIPTU Offices Portlaoise at 3 PM. New members are welcome.

Active Retired

Portlaoise Active Retirement welcome all our members back on Wed. 7th Sept with a video of ‘A Trip Down Memory Lane’. Bowls start again on Monday, September 12 in St Mary’s Hall at the usual time of 3pm. New members always welcome to join the ARA held every Wed. At 3pm in Portlaoise Parish Centre.

Youth Theatre

Doyle family fund

On Saturday the 17th of September, Bagatelle will play in Portlaoise Heritage Hotel as part of the fundraising efforts in aid of the Doyle Family in Portlaoise. Doors will open at 8.30am and tickets €25 available to buy now from reception in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. It promises to be a great night with amazing music and entertainment, fab raffle prizes all while supporting a very worthy local cause. On the 1Oth of June, 37 year old Christopher Doyle passed away suddenly leaving his wife to care for their seven children. A group of local parents have come together aiming to raise enough money to buy a9-seatercar that can easily accommodate the Doyle family.

Laois School of Music and Music Generation Laois joint open evening takes place on Wednesday, September 7 from 6pm to 8pm at the Portlaoise Youth Education Centre, Railway St, Portlaoise. All welcome.

Comhaltas Season

Portlaoise Comhaltas classes resume at St Paul’s NS, Borris Rd., with information and registration on Tues Sept 6 at 7 pm

Portlaoise branch offers an opportunity to learn to play traditional Irish music. Caters for all ages and abilities on a wide range of traditional instruments with specialist teachers for harp, uileann pipes, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, whistle, flute, guitar etc. Don't miss this opportunity to try an instrument and develop a life changing skill.

Nordic Walking

Walkers of all ages and anybody who wants tackle the symptoms of arthritis are invited to get involved with a Nordic Walking Group in Portlaoise. The second of two introductory FitSticks workshops takes place on Saturday, September 10, supported by Laois Sports Partnership and the Laois Branch of Arthritis Ireland will deliver from 11am-1pm at the Macra Hall on the Timahoe Road. All ages and abilities catered for - poles will be supplied for the duration of the workshops.

Path fundraiser

Portlaoise Action to Homelessness is holding its annual Croghan Hill 5km challenge on Saturday, September 28. Bus to Croghan in Offaly. Goodie bag on bus with t-shirt and treats. Challenge starts at 10am. Bus back to town at about 1.30pm. BBQ and Entertainment in Kavanagh's pub in Portlaoise. Only children 12 and over are permitted to do the course with a pre signed consent form. The event raises funds for street homeless.

Laois Hospice

This year the Laois Hospice fundraising coffee morning takes place on Thursday, September 15. It is part of Ireland's biggest coffee morning and supported by Bewley's. Laois Hospice invites people to spare an hour on the day to host a coffee morning or evening or arrange a coffee morning in your workplace. Invite a few friends and put the kettle on and share a cup of coffee. Laois Hospice are looking for people to host coffee mornings or evenings on September 15. If you would like to be a host please contact Seamus O'Donoghue at 0868709311 for supply of coffee. All monies collected in Laois are spent on hospice services in Laois.
