Two groups from Heywood Community School and another from Portlaoise College are among the 550 entrants chosen to show projects at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition next January.
Heywood students Sarah McMahon, Jessica Barrett and Florianna Mezzapelle will investigate what factors influence speed most, in 'Striding for Speed', in the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences intermediate category.
Ruth Bergin and Maeve Weston will study the effect of positive and negative feedback on schoolchildren, in 'A Quantification of the Effect of Praise And Criticism on the Standard of Academic Performance', in the Social and Behavioural Sciences intermediate category.
Portlaoise College second years Emma Lynch, Ben O'Rourke and Saorch Lawlor under the guidance of Ms Sweeney and Ms Kinsella, will test mains water in Laois against three bottled waters, in the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences Junior category. In the past five years, Laois won 9 awards.
