This year's Europe Direct Soapbox Competition at Mountmellick Library produced a winner who went on to scoop second place in the National Final.
Anna Delaney, a 6th year student in Mountrath Community School, won first place in the Under 18 category in Mountmellick on October 19, winning an iPad mini, with her 3 minute speech on "The EU: United in Diversity"
She qualified for the National Final of the Eurodirect Soapbox Competition on November 8 in the National Concert Hall Dublin.
There she was awarded second place out of seven regional finalists.
It was a wonderful experience Anna said afterwards. “I was thrilled to represent my school in the final,” she said.
Laois County Librarian Bernie Foran attended the Mountmellick final, which was judged by Rosaleen O'Keane, Ruth Miller and Gary Lacumbre.
“Each speaker was excellent and it was quite a challenge for the judges to choose the winners,” she said.
Winners were Anna in 1st place, Suzie Manza, 2nd place and Riain Hossain, 3rd place.
Highly commended; Daniel Byrne, Niamh Robertson, Mary-Anne Alfa, Ire Adebari and Emma Comerford.
