Mountmellick Drama Group has helped out local victims of the recent flooding to the tune of €1500.

Last Friday December 15, chairman Shay Flannery presented their generous donation to Jason McInerney on behalf of Mountmellick Flood Community Support Group.

The flood on November 22 swept through the town, with about 100 homes and businesses flooded, including some of the drama club's own members.

"It was an awful scourge, but this is not just because of our members. Hopefully it will benefit in some way, we wanted to do our part for it. Normally we make several small donations from the proceeds of our annual play in March, which normally makes about €1,500. We made a unanimous decision at our meeting last Wednesday to donate that amount now instead, when it is needed most," Mr Flannery said.

This year their production of "Lovers" by Brian Friel will be staged in the Community Arts Centre, Mountmellick on March 8, 9 and 10 at 8pm Nightly.

Uniquely it will be staged both upstairs and downstairs in Mountmellick Community Arts Centre.

"As the play requires two separate sets we are availing of both the Balcony Theatre and the main auditorium for our presentation. This is a challenging first for us and it will a unique opportunity for our audience. We are very excited about the prospect," said Jessie Conroy from the group.

The annual Mountmellick Drama Festival will take place from Friday 9-16 March inclusive.
