The 7th Laois Camross Scouts stood out as winners of the Children and Youth Category at the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards.

The judges were impressed with all groups in this category and said it was an extremely close contest.

"However, what sets our winner apart is that this group of young people are returning this time and nurturing back into their community and are involved in a broad level of volunteerism themselves," said the citation.

Ann Delaney has been the leader of the Camross Scouts since the troop was set up 12 years ago.

“‘We are such a small group, fighting for our place in everything €500 is a lot of money. It’s the recognition of it. To see the smile on the children's faces when you see them after starting a fire with flint or the screams of them after doing a knot, it’s about seeing the excitement on the kid's faces,” she said.

Ciara Delaney was among the scouts present and said it was 'amazing' to be chosen. The next step for the Camross Scouts is to have their own den and attract younger members to add to the 30 members.

"We are working on getting young members and leaders who are over 18 to help make it grow," she said.

The judges believed each group is most deserving in their own right in the category.

"The sense of volunteerism, community spirit, and dedication are evident in all of these groups. The level of time afforded and invested in the nurturing of children and youth, and in their growth and development across a range of spheres will no doubt show dividends for years to come," they said.

The runner-up was the Saplings Parents Committee.  The Certificate winners were: Laois Marlins Swimming Club, Portarlington ForÓige Youth Club, Portlaoise Panthers Basketball Club, Rathdowney Youth Cafe, Stradbally, Vicarstown, Timahoe Youth Leaders, Vicarstown Youth Club.

Anne Marie Maher from the Sports Department in Laois County Council and Cllr John King, Laois County Council Cathaoirleach presented the awards in this section.
