Laois winners announced in Someone Like Me national art competition

Young Laois artist Aoife Dunphy from St Pius X NS in Ballacolla, Junior County winner in the Someone Like Me competition.

The two Laois winners in the national Someone Like Me art competition come from neighbouring rural schools in south Laois.

St Pius X National School in Ballacolla had the Junior County Winner, Aoife Dunphy, 7, from First Class.

The senior winner is the nearby Scoil Fionntáin Naofa in Abbeyleix.

The competition is supported by the National Disability Authority and aims to promote disability awareness and nurture understanding in children.

Aoife drew herself giving her granddad who uses walking sticks, a bunch of flowers to cheer him up. The submission was assisted by class teacher Ms Theloke.

“We are so proud of Aoife, she is a brilliant artist. To be recognised nationally is a wonderful achievement for her and our school,” she said.

The Abbeyleix school's submission was assisted by teachers Deirdre Bergin and Richard Connor. All of 5th and 6th class won for their summertime flowerbed installation of 3D paper flowers with handprints and the message 'together we make the world a more colourful place'.

The national final took place in Dublin recently.
