A drugs information and awareness talk for parents by Detective Scully of Portlaoise Drugs Unit will take place in Mountmellick Community School tonight Tuesday November 13 at 7.30pm. This informative talk will cover recognising drug taking, knowing the signs, how to recognise various drugs etc. It is a free talk for parents of all school going children, both primary and secondary level. All are welcome.


On Sunday November 18 The Rock GAA will hold a monster auction in the clubhouse from 1pm onwards. Admission is free and all are welcome. There will be loads of bargains to be had on the day and everything must go, so come early and avoid disappointment. The knitting circle meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to noon in the library. Drop in for cuppa and a chat. All donations of wool would be greatly appreciated.


Classes return tonight after the Halloween break. The Cupla Focal Irish language starter workshop will now start on Tuesday November 13 at 7.50pm to 8.05pm. Names can be left at the class tonight if interested. Further information from 085 7138940.


LEAF (Laois Environmental Action Forum) will hold its AGM on Wednesday November 14 at 8pm in O’Loughlin’s Hotel, Main Street Portlaoise. The AGM is open to all who have an interest in environmental issues in Laois.

Guest speaker is Andy Dunne, Chairperson of Laois Farm Forestry Growers Group who will speak about the role of forests in a sustainable future and will be available to answer any questions from the public.

Come and hear what LEAF has been doing during the past year and the plans it has for 2013. Topics include the economy, energy, food, transport, community, waste, water, healthcare, employment, education and biodiversity.

All are welcome to join the LEAF network which is the only open network for individuals, businesses and community groups to share, learn and co-operate in promoting and building sustainable practices in Laois.


There will be registration for the children’s chorus cast for the upcoming pantomime Robinson Crusoe on Sunday November 18. Registration will be held at 5.30pm in the Macra hall. The panto will be staged in February 2013.

The Laois Macra Christmas party takes place on Saturday December 1 in The Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. This is always a fantastic event and is open to all members, current, past and prospective. Mountmellick Macra will hold a fundraising table quiz on Wednesday November 21 in The Mellick Inn at 9.30pm. All support greatly appreciated.


The following meetings will all be in the MDA at 10.30am. On Wednesday November 14 Finola Colgan from Mental Health Ireland will talk to the members about keeping themselves happy and healthy. On Wednesday November 28 there will be a talk on ‘Can we avoid getting Dementia?’ On Wednesday December 12 there will be a music and mince pies party.

The annual Christmas Dinner Dance will be on Friday December 7 in The Gandon Inn.

Our weekly activities are Mondays: Boccia in the Macra hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: there will be no dancing classes on Wednesday October 24 and Wednesday October 31. Dancing resumes on Wednesday November 7 from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court.

Thursdays: art classes in Wolfe Tone Court from 2pm to 4pm and music and song in St Vincent’s hospital from 2pm to 4pm.

The Active Retirement Association’s outing in November is to the Titanic exhibition in Belfast on Friday November 30. The bus will leave the MDA at 8.15am. All places are filled now but if you would like to put your name on the waiting list please notify a committee member.


A story time session for 4 to 8 year olds will take place on Thursday November 15 at 4pm. All are welcome.

An art exhibition by the students of Kilbride Art Studio is currently on show in the gallery. Una McCormack will give a painting workshop on Saturday November 17 from 11am to 1pm. Contact 057 8644572 to book a place.

Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. The annual bereavement mass will be held on Monday November 26 at 7.30pm in St Joseph’s Church.


Anyone aged from 16 to 18 in the parish, in the senior school cycle or finished school is invited to sign up for the John Paul II Award. This award helps young people get involved in the life of their local parish and community. Religion is not just for learning, nor a list of rules designed to stop you doing what you want. Religion if for living and through taking an active part in you church and community you will experience the contentment and fulfilment that comes from serving others.

There was deep regret at the news of the death of Thomas Ward of Acragar at St Vincent’s Hospital Mountmellick on Monday November 5. Tommy was well known and respected in the local community and his passing is sadly regretted by all who knew him. Tommy was predeceased by his wife Peggy.

Reposal took place Tommy’s home in Acragar until removal on Wednesday morning to St Joseph’s Church. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery.

The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Tommy’s sons and daughters, family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their bereavement.
