Coillte have lodged a planning application for a very large industrial wind development on Cullenagh mountain.

The plan is to build 18 enormous turbines (131m tall) across Cullenagh and into Clonticoe.

This development would be one of the largest infrastructural projects in Laois in recent years.

Another private company have also applied to build 8 even bigger turbines (150 metres) close to Clonticoe in the Spink area.

Local groups are having a public meeting in Ballyroan Community Hall on Tuesday August 27 at 8pm.

The meeting will inform people about the proposals and advise on an appropriate response. Building lots of wind turbines among a community raises many problems and issues that range from landscape damage, environmental damage, noise disturbance, property value reduction, reduced or refused access etc etc.

We would encourage any body from County Laois who is concerned, or would like more information or would like to preserve our wonderful environment to come to the meeting.

Ballyroan Abbey juvenile club are holding a social night in Whelan’s Lounge on Friday August 30. There will be a raffle for anyone buying a ticket at €5 for many top prizes including All-Ireland tickets.

The ever popular local band Abbey Folk will be providing musical entertainment on the night. Tickets are available from parents of juveniles in the club. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
