Team Hope Shoebox Appeal

The Team Hope Children’s Shoebox Appeal is underway around the country. Completed shoeboxes can be dropped off in Mountmellick at the library or the post office. The closing date for this year’s appeal is November 11. To find out how you can participate, log on to to download your leaflet.

Kickboxing & Taekwondo

Laois Martial Arts hold classes for Juniors/ Seniors and Adults in Mountmellick & Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Ladies classes now available. Full Matted Professional Gym including punch bags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree National Champion. Contact 087 2768843


The parishes of Clonaslee, Killeigh, Mountmellick & Rosenallis (Barrow Rise Pastoral Area) welcome Fr Liam Lawton in concert on Friday November 15 at 8pm (doors open 7.30pm) in the Community Arts Centre. As a special event to close the Year of Faith the concert will include a choir from all four parishes. Tickets (€20) from Mountmellick parish office 057 8624390.


There will be a Halloween fancy dress disco on Thursday October 31 in the Owenass hall from 7pm to 9pm for children up to 12 years, under 6’s must be accompanied by a parent. Admission €3 per child, shop will be available. Prizes for best fancy dress and dancers. All welcome, strict supervision.


The annual sale is on Saturday November 9 from 10.30am to 1pm in the old school Pearse St. All the usual stalls present, teas served and a raffle will be held. All support appreciated.


Line dancing classes continue every Wednesday from 8pm to 9pm in the ICA. All welcome.


Mountmellick ICA is travelling by bus to the Knitting and Stitching show in the RDS on Saturday November 2. All greatly enjoyed last year’s event. There are few places still available on the bus. Contact Dolores on 0862664716 or any committee member for details. 


The annual Mission Alive table quiz is on Thursday December 5 in the Druid Bar (note change of venue & day). All proceeds to the Orphan Project in Lusaka in Zambia.

Wednesday November 13: group meeting in MDA at 10.30am. ‘The Ageing with Confidence’ 8 week course will continue on Monday November 4 at 10.30am in the MDA. Weekly activities: Mondays: Boccia in the Macra hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Thursdays: music and song in St. Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm. New members welcome.


The knitting circle meets every Tuesday from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your knitting and enjoy a cuppa and chat. Robert Stack’s exhibition ‘Laois Scapes’ continues in the gallery until November 2.


Author Niamh Boyce will read from her novel ‘The Herbalist’ in the library on Tuesday November 5 at 11am. Niamh was named the Hennessy New Irish Writer 2012. All welcome.
