Heritage House wins Award

The Heritage Council of Ireland announced on December 19 that Heritage House Abbeyleix were declared overall winners in the best Children’s event category organised during Heritage week in August 2013.

The judging committee identified Kids Shipwreck Dig Workshop as clear winners of the best Children’s Event Category. Heritage House set out to give children an inderstanding of archaeology, the skills involved in excavation and the excitement of finding and recording artefacts.

The archaeological excavation experience gave the children a chance to get their hands dirty and uncover the past at their own pace. A show and tell at the end of the excavation allowed children to discuss what they found and say what they thought each of the artefacts might have been.

A treasure hunt in the exhibition area got the children to look at the displays properly so they could answer, draw and map the answers.

Great credit to Sinead and Richard for putting so much time and effort in making event such a challenging and exciting experience for the children.
