Plans are progressing on the relocation of Portlaoise Library to the former Shaws building on the town’s Main Street.
Portlaoise Town Council were recently informed, in a written communication from county librarian, Bernie Foran, that the sale of the former Shaws building has been finalised and the library section are working with the property section of Laois County Council to change over utilities and make the premises secure for insurance purposes.
Ms Foran said the library section expect to proceed with detailed plans pending the sanction of department grant aid.
“It’s a fantastic purchase, but people are getting anxious over the time frame,” said Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. “It would bring more footflow to Main Street, we need to get it as soon as possible.”
“I agree, there’s a sense of urgency. It’s a superb building, but it would need to be renovated,” said Cllr Mary Sweeney.
