Round house fun day

Family fun day on Sunday, August 17 2-5pm on the Green, Marian Avenue to raise funds for the Round House Commuity Centre Centre. All welcome.


Storytelling workshop August 21 & 22 at 2.30pm. Admission is free. Booking essential. Drumming Workshop for Culture Night on September 19, 4pm-5.30pm

Book clubs for adults and children starting back in September. Taking names for both now. Booking still open for a variety of free events for Heritage week August 23-31.

Fatima fund

Fatima fund dance takes place on Wednesday, September 17 in the Castle Arms Durrow. Features Solitaire & Twice Shy features guests Checkers. Raffle prize two nights at the Great Northern Hotel and Leisure Centre, Bundoran. Free bus from Lyster Square, Portlaoise at 8.30pm to and from Durrow. Dancing 9am-midnight. Tea served and door prize. Subscription: €10.

Walking tour

Clondarrig Cemetery Mass takes place on Wednesday, August 6 at 7.30pm. Pray for fine weather.

Drive-in bingo

Portlaoise GAA Club have launched the drive-in bingo sessions at the grounds in Rathleague. The fun family bingo is on the last Sunday of August and September at 3pm. Overall payout on each day will be €7,500 which includes an accumulative jackpot starting at €1,000. In support of the club, Portlaoise Musical Society and Multiple Sclerosis Ireland.

Parish Lotto

Portlaoise Parish Lotto jackpot not won on July 31. Numbers: 1,7,21,30 The 18 match 3 winners won €56 each. This week’s jackpot is €11,000.

Drawing Workshop

Heath GAA lotto

There was no winner in the Heath GAA fundraiser on Tuesday last July 29 and match 3 winners. Numbers drawn: 6,9,13,15 that means August 5 the top prize is worth €7,400.

Trad sessions

There will be weekly sessions in Portlaoise hosted by the local CCÉ branch on Thursdays at 8.30pm.

historical Architecture

Portlaoise Library host a series lectures on the historical architecture in the library in Lyster Square Wednesday evenings 7pm From July 30 to September 3. The lectures include features of vernacular architecture such as the thatch cottage and traditional farm buildings as well as the well-known Stradbally Market House and also a study of the gate lodges.

De Vesci Gardens

De Vesci gardens will once again open their gates for the public enjoyment. Taking place on Sunday August 10 from 2-5pm in aid of Abbeyleix and Portlaoise Lions club, the day will include side attractions as well as walks around the beautiful gardens. Admission is €5 per adult and kids free so come along and bring a friend.


Laois Skate Crew are a committee of young adults in the early consultation process of a creating a skatepark for young people in Portlaoise and surrounding areas. Adults with an interest in the venture are invited to call Steven on 085 8230259 to assist in the process.

Youth Cafe

Portlaoise Youth Cafe is opened as normal over the summer months. If your child is between the ages of 10-18 years, why not drop them down to the Youth Cafe, only €1 entry fee on Fridays for 13-18 year olds 2-6pm. On Saturdays 3-5pm for 10-18 year olds. They can meet new friends, play pool, computer games, air hockey and attend fun activities like music events. Light refreshments served. The volunteers are fully trained in child protection and all are garda vetted.

Road repairs

After the confusion of traffic on the Ballydavis to Stradbally road during the ploughing championship in September last year Dunamaise Community alert made representations to the organisers of this years event and last week they were informed that work will commence shortly on improvements to the Ballycarroll Rock of Dunamaise road and locals are advised there maybe hold ups in the area over the coming weeks but it should prove to be worthwhile come September.

Late Brigid Phelan

Condolences to the family of the late Brigid (Bridie) Phelan (née Byrne) of Paddock, Mountrath, formerly of Clonkeen, Portlaoise who died on July 30 peacefully at her residence. Wife of the Late Denis (Dinny) Phelan. Deeply regretted by her loving daughters Elizabeth and Marie, sons PJ, Gerard, Sean, Raymond, Brian, Gabriel, and Noel, brother Joe, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. Reposing at her son Sean’s residence Roundwood. Removal to St Edmund’s Church, Castletown (Via Mountrath) for Funeral Mass. Burial after in St Fergal’s Cemetery, Camross.

Late Mary BYRNE

Condolences to the family of the late Mary Byrne (née Holohan) of Portlaoise who died on July 30, peacefully at Ballard Lodge Nursing Home, in her 98th year. Mary, beloved wife of the late Malachy, deeply regretted by her loving son, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest, Portlaoise hospital. Removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for requiem mass. Burial after in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
