1916 Commemoration

A public workshopswill be held to develop ideas for the commemoration of the Centenary of the 1916 Rising in Laois on Tuesday, May 12 in Durrow at the Castle Arms Hotel. The workshop will run from 8-10pm and will include a presentation on the national plans, some background to the plans for Laois so far, and the rest of the time will be dedicated to facilitated workshops where participants will be invited to develop and share their ideas on how the events and people of that time should be commemorated in Laois next year. All are welcome.

Fun Run & Family Day

“No Sweat” Fun Run (5k/10k) & Family Day: is on Saturday, May 16 from 3pm. Registration from 2pm at the Old Boys School or you can register online at: http://www.popupraces.ie/event.php The route is mainly flat route with some minor hills. There is also a family fun day and the race is open to walkers, joggers & runners of all abilities. Light refreshments will be available to all who partake. The race is to create awareness for a very rare condition called “Ectodermal Dysplasia”. Ectodermal Dysplasia are inherited Disorders that involve defects in the hair, nails, sweat glands, teeth and skin. It is estimated that in every 10,000 births only 7 children will be affected with this condition! There will also be a Fundraiser following the event in Lennon’s Bar, Durrow. Drops of Green will be playing & there will be a BBQ and a Monster Raffle with prizes including 2 tickets to Electric Picnic. Tickets are €10. The Parish lotto with a jackpot of €1,300 euro was not won. Winner of €30 Marilyn Smith, €25 Daniel Dunne, and €20 Mary Lennon. The Lotto will be held on May 18 in O’Connell’s Cullohill with a possible jackpot of €1,600. All tickets must be handed in before 9.30 pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.


Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers held a Trout Fishing Competition for the Bill Kelly Cup on Sunday, the winner was Seamus Coffey, 2nd Declan McDonald and 3rd Mick Walsh, u-14 yrs. 1st Lee Coffey, 2nd Daniel O Regan, u-16 yrs.1st Patrick O’Regan, 2nd Tara Burke. On May 31 there will be a pike fishing competition for the C. J. Finnegan Memorial Cup. All members will receive text alerts about each competition in the week prior to the event.

St Vincent de Paul

Congratulations to George O’Brien, Cork Road, Durrow who received a St. Vincent de Paul Certificate and medal for over forty six year of voluntary service in Durrow and in the District. Both George and his wife Mary are wished well by everyone in the Durrow area and we thank George for his wonderful service to the area through St. Vincent de Paul.

Dawn Chorus

On Sunday May 24 Pat Durkin of Bird Watch Ireland will host the Annual Dawn Chorus walk through Dunmore Woods starting at 4.30 am. Please wear suitable warm clothing and shoes. This is a wonderful walk to hear and listen to the many birds singing in a new day and have them identified by Pat. There will be the usual sizzle-up when the walk finishes. Any donations will be greatly received and much appreciated.

The May meeting of Cullohill ICA was held on Tuesday night. Votes of sympathy were extended to PJ McEvoy and family on death of Elizabeth, The Delaney family on death of Mary. RIP. Laois week in An Grianan is on May 15 to May 19 inclusive. The Laois federation four day outing to West Cork staying at the Westlodge, Bantry with bus tours daily cost is €250 including full board and meals. To travel call Noreen Byrne 0578738980. The Cullohill Pilgrimage to Knock is on June 30. Raffle winners were Mary Kelly, Helen Muldowney, Mary Walsh, Mary Bergin and Agnes Barnaville. The meeting concluded with a nice cuppa. Strictly Dancing

An important meeting will be held on Thursday, May 14 at 8.30pm at the library in Durrow, to confirm dance partners and to explore fundraising ideas for Strictly Come Dancing. All dancers must attend.

South Laois Tourism

South Laois Tourism will launch a tourism information point at Topaz/Supermacs Service Station Junction 3 Ballacolla on Sunday, May 31 at 12 noon. Guest Ireland rubgy star Miller. To be followed by walk at Grantstown Lake.

Enrolment Cullohill

Enrolment of new pupils for September 2015 to St. Tighearnachs Primary School, Cullohill is taking place. Call to the school office 9.30 am-1 pm to get enrolment forms or ring the school at 05787-37281
