Former librarian Laura Brett will visit both Abbeyleix and Mountrath Library on Thursday 28th May, as part of a book promotion tour for her newly published children’s picture book. Laura worked for a number of years at Abbeyleix Library, organising many author visits and community events.


A meeting of Abbeyleix ICA was held on May 5 and 15 members attended. Yvonne Porter opened the meeting with a prayer and My Land. The minutes of the March meeting were read by Alice Reilly and Catherine Smith gave the treasurer’s report. The competition winners were; 1st Brenda Dunican, 2nd Alice Reilly, 3rd Pat O’Halloran. The raffle prizes went to; 1st Mary Duggan, 2nd Violet Rothwell, 3rd Bride Reilly. The meeting ended with a lovely supper served by Brenda Dunican. A federation meeting was held on April 22 in Abbeyleix Golf club and 95 members attended. It was a very successful night and the Guild want to offer their appreciation to the Golf Club for their co-operation and the lovely supper provided. There are now 348 members in County Laois and new members would be very welcome. The next federation meeting will be on June 24 in Clonaslee and the national AGM will be held in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise on May 23.


The AGM will be held in the upstairs meeting room in Fr. Breen Park on Wednesday May 13 at 8.30pm. The park development group invite anyone who is interested in representing the community or who has an interest in the park to come along. Scoil Mhuire Parents’ Association are holding a 70s disco in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Friday May 22 from 9.30pm to late. Admission in €10 and tickets are available from the Parents’ Association committee members. All are welcome and it should be a fun night.


An exhibition entitled ‘Me, myself and I’ has opened at Abbeyleix Library on May 1 and will run until May 31. It is part of the ‘artist in residence’ programme with the arts council of Laois. The project involves artist and art teacher Orla McDonagh along with 12 students taken from all classes at Heywood Community School who were selected on artistic merit, creative thinking and original ideas over a wide range of ages and abilities. The students will produce two self portraits, the first of which follows classic portraiture; representative, painted with symbolism, the person you want the world to see you as, a controlled image, a reflection of our obsession with social media and how we are portrayed.


Abbeyleix Tennis Club is starting a new tennis year and welcomes new members of all ages and abilities. There are social nights weekly for advanced adults, beginners and teenagers. The sacrament of First Holy Communion will be held in the Church of the Most Holy Rosary in Abbeyleix on Saturday May 16 at 11am.


Storytelling with Leslie for 3-6 year olds continues each Saturday morning at 10am as does the juvenile chess club, also on Saturday morning at 10am. The knitting club meets on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm.


The town of Abbeyleix has been holding a very successful Christmas market in the historic Market Square for the last number of years. This year we are also holding a mid-summer market and mini festival in the grounds of Heritage House on Sunday, June 21. The market and festival is aimed at people of all ages with bouncy castles for the kids, music, entertainment and market stalls. Over 55 Showcase

As part of the Laois Age Friendly programme a showcase/information day for the over 55’s will take place on Thursday, May, 21 in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. The event, which features Mary O’Rourke, starts at 10am and finishes at 4pm. There will be a number of speakers and stands, refreshments will be provided and the day will end with some entertainment. Condolences to the family of the late Anne ‘Nancy’ Knowles (née Doogue) The Pub, Crossard, Wolfhill Formerly Cappanaclough, Abbeyleix who died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on April 29. Beloved wife of the late Willie, mother to Mike, Andy, Statia, Kaye, Willie, Ann and Joseph, sadly missed by her loving family sisters, brothers extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at her residence. Removal to St. Mary’s Church, Wolfhill for funeral Mass. Burial afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery.


The death has occurred of Bridget Murphy (née McHugh), Holycross, Tipperary and formerly Murphy’s Drapery, Main Street, Abbeyleix on April 28. Pre-deceased by her husband Frank and sons Neil and Frank. Bridget reposed in the Oratory, Sue Ryder House, Holycross on Thursday April 30 and then on to Holycross Abbey for prayers. Requiem Mass was offered at Holycross Abbey on Friday May 1 followed by burial in Mount St Lawrence Cemetery. Bridget died peacefully surrounded by her family and will be sadly missed by her daughter Joanne, son-in-law Martin, daughter-in-law Ethel, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family, Sue Ryder companions and friends.
