The Mountmellick area track and field competition will be held on Wednesday May 30 (and not 23 as previously stated) in Smith’s Field at 7pm. Mountmellick United, in association with the FAI, are hosting a juvenile soccer summer camp from July 23 to July 27, in Conor Davis Park. Age group is 6 to 14 and it’s open to boys and girls.

Sunday, July 15 is Matt Talbot day in Knock shrine. The mid region and our own council are very proud to have St Joseph’s church choir, with organist Audrey Whelan, singing on that day. Other members of the region will also take part in the celebration of mass.

Two buses will travel, one of which will take the choir. Departure times: Mountmellick 8am, Portlaoise 8.30am and Mountrath 9am. Those who wish to travel should contact their council’s secretary with Mountmellick secretary Sheila Kearney to be informed of final numbers travelling.

The regional meeting takes place in ICA house on Wednesday June 6 at 8pm. Applications will be taken in the convent extension on Sunday June 3 after noon mass.


Macra is holding a table quiz for children from 3rd to 6th classes on Wednesday May 30. The quiz will take place in the Macra hall at 7pm to 9pm and a team of four children with one adult will cost €10. We would greatly appreciate your support.

Our very own Grace Murphy will represent Laois in The Blue Jean country queen festival over the June bank holiday weekend in Athboy.  Our travel officer, Aidan Cashin is organising a bus to the event in Athboy on Friday June 1. Tag rugby training for the upcoming competition is on going this week, training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm in Rosenallis soccer pitch. Badminton won’t be on this Wednesday due to the table quiz.

Brian Brady youth theatre is staging the musical ‘Annie’ in the Macra hall from June 6 to June 9. Tickets cost €7 and are available at the door. Show times are Wednesday to Saturday at 8pm and a Saturday matinee at 3pm.

Kickboxing classes take place every week in the hall. Classes are as follows: children’s lessons are on Monday and Thursday from 5pm to 6pm and adult classes are on Tuesday and Thursday from 8pm to 9.30 pm. Rosenallis athletics training continues every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm in Johnsgrove Rosenallis.


The juvenile GAA draw takes place in the Hollow Bar on Sunday June 3. Tickets are to be dropped into the Hollow Bar before Sunday. All support is greatly appreciated.


Coaching for Gaelic Football for girls and boys U8, U10, U12 and U14 continues at the Rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. All teams are up and running at this stage but new players are welcome and can register on Tuesdays or Thursdays, or alternatively contact the club’s juvenile secretary John Allen at 086 3264102 for more details.


U6 and U8 hurling training continues in Acragar every Monday at 6.30pm. U10 and U12 follows at 7pm, new players welcome. U6 and U8 football training is at 6pm on Thursdays.U14 football training continues at 5pm on Saturdays in Acragar.


Training for all U10 and U12 continues on Mondays at 6pm in Acragar. New members are very welcome. Further up the age groups club training continues from 16 upwards on Tuesday and Fridays.


Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach. For details contact 087 2768843.


Our knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your knitting needles and join us for a cuppa and a chat.

The next meeting of the adult book club takes place on Tuesday June 5 at 11am. The book for discussion is ‘Catcher in the Rye’ by J.D. Salinger.

An exhibition by ‘Paint Pots’ children’s art group from Ballyfin will feature in the gallery for the month of June. The official launch will take place on Tuesday June 5 at 6pm. All are welcome.


The next group meeting will be on Wednesday May 30 at 10.30am in the MDA.

Because of the Bealtaine festival our members attended many enjoyable events during the month of May including our own very enjoyable tea dance which was held in the Macra hall on Monday May 28.

 The dancing classes and art lessons have now finished but the following activities continue, on Mondays Boccia is held in the Macra hall at 7.30pm, on Tuesdays aqua aerobics continues in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon with the free bus leaving the MDA at 11.15am and on

Wednesdays there is music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 6.15pm to 7.45pm.

Please note there are are only a few places left on the free computer courses in the MDA which are being organised specially for us. These start on this Friday June 1 and will continue on June 8 and 15.

There was much regret at the death of Tony Kelly of Garryhinch Portarlington and formerly Portnahinch on Sunday May 20. Tony’s passing is sadly regretted by all who knew him. Remains reposed at Moloney’s Funeral Home until removal on Tuesday evening to St Joseph’s church. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon on Wednesday with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Tony’s family, relatives and friends on their bereavement.


It was with regret that the community heard of the death of Paddy Hanlon of Garoon at Kilminchy Lodge nursing home on Monday May 21. Paddy was predeceased by his wife Margaret. Removal to St Joseph’s church took place on Tuesday evening. Requiem mass was celebrated on Wednesday at 10am with burial afterwards to St Brigid’s cemetery, Rosenallis. The deepest sympathy of the community is extended to Paddy’s family on their loss.
