Rathdowney Macra held a sponsored cycle from Cullohill to Dundrum 120km on August 3 in aid of Laois Hospice. The total raised was €1029. Rathdowney Macra thank everyone that gave so generously.

Dance classes

Social dance classes will resume in St Kieran’s Hall Johnstown at 8pm on Wednesday October 2. If you would like to dance the old time waltz, quick-step, the fox-trot etc, just come along and bring your friends. You don’t need a partner. Phone 086 8825200

Laois connects - men’s mental health

On Thursday, October 3, a free workshop will take place in Rathdowney Men’s Shed from 10am - 12.30pm focusing on issues for men as part of Laois Connects. There is no charge for this event and pre-booking is not necessary. The workshop will be facilitated by Finola Colgan, Mental Health Ireland. laois connects - Teenage zumba

Also on Thursday, October 3, a teenage zumba class will take place in the Parochial Hall from 7pm - 8.30pm. The class will encourage fitness and fun to increase self confidence and positive body image.

laois connects - Coping with loss

On Saturday, October 5 a workshop on coping with loss will take place in Marian Hall from 10am - 1pm. Brian Johnston, a psychotherapist, will present an approach that can help us heal the pain of loss and bereavement. Booking is essential, cost €5. The 29th annual Rathdowney Review magazine is being compiled and will be in the shops by early December. The public are invited to submit items of interest such as births deaths and marriages, graduations, anniversaries, sporting achievements, Down Memory Lane, family profiles. Please send your photo or article to Maureen Guilfoyle, Betty O’Brien or Niall O’Doherty as soon as possible. The deadline is the last week of October. The Slieve Bloom Storytelling festival takes place from Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 October. This year’s special guests are Paddy O’Brien from Cork and Jack Lynch from Dublin. Shows start at 8pm nightly: Thursday 10 Roundwood House, Mountrath; Friday 11 and Saturday 12 Leap Castle. Each night’s show will also include some singers and musicians. Tickets for each night are available by phoning Chris Byrne at 086 2789147


A great bingo is held every Tuesday night at 8.30pm in the Rathdowney Community Centre. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Run by the Community Centre Group.


The Mens Shed is open every Thursday morning from 10am to 12 noon at the old Convent School. A great opportunity for all men to come together to share their skills and talents, learn new ones or simply meet for a chat and a cuppa. New members welcome.


Winter training. Turbo training classes will commence on Wednesday October 9 in the Marion centre at 8pm sharp. You must have your own turbo trainer. Cost of training €1 per night.

On Sunday October 27, OCC are holding a 70k leisure cycle starting and finishing in Errill village. Entry fee is a donation. This will be strictly a controlled event, max speed of 25K per hour or 15 mph. Start time 11am. The route will be Clonmore, Templemore, Roscrea, Borris in Ossory, Rathdowney. There will be a barbecue for cyclists organised at the end of the cycle.


Vintage and air display on Dermot Leahy’s farm, Greenroads, on Sunday October 6, at 1.30pm. A great family day guaranteed. Your support would be greatly appreciated.


Condolences to the family of the late Deborah Hodgins (née Stanley) of Coolfin House, Rathdowney, who died on September 26 peacefully in the loving care of Droimnìn nursing home, Stradbally. Deborah was predeceased by her husband Alan. Sadly missed by her family and friends. Her remains reposed at her brother Herbert’s residence in Rathdowney before a funeral service at St Andrew’s Church, and burial in Rathdowney local cemetery last Saturday September 28. May she rest in peace.
