Borris in Ossory Social Services Committee wishes to remind all the bingo players that the Christmas bingo party will take place in St. Canice’s Hall on Saturday December 14 from 2pm to 5pm. There will be music and singing and a lovely festive afternoon tea will be served.
A Christmas Concert featuring the Laois ICA Choir and local singer Erin Dollard will be held in Knockaroo Church on Sunday, December 15, at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be served afterwards in Knockaroo Community Centre. Admission is €10 and proceeds will be donated to the victims of the hurricane in the Philippines. This is the first visit by the Laois ICA Choir to the parish and it is hoped the concert will be well supported.
The last meeting of Borris in Ossory ICA Guild took place on Wednesday night December 4, presided over by Helen Kavanagh. Members were informed that their 150 shoeboxes this year have gone to Moldova, the poorest country in Eastern Europe. A report was given on the Winter Federation meeting which was held in Castletown on Sunday, November 24. Helen Kavanagh was congratulated on winning the perpetual trophy for the best hand knitted Christmas stocking.
The guest speaker at the meeting was Mary O’Gorman, craft teacher from Maynooth, who demonstrated her handmade Christmas decorations. The competition for the best six mince pies was won by Noreen Whelan, 2nd Kitty Foyle and 3rd Nuala Costello and all present received a Christmas gift in a Kris kindle.
The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 8 and the competition will be the Nicest Christmas Card you received.
THE LATE PADDY BERGIN RIP
The death took place at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise on Thursday, November 21 of Mr Patrick (Paddy)Bergin, Ballyquaid, Ballybrophy. His remains reposed at his home until removal on Saturday morning to the Church of Assumption, Killasmeestia, for Funeral Mass followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
The late Paddy is deeply regretted by his loving wife Mary, daughters Maureen and Ann, son Donal, grandchildren, sons-in-law, brother Kieran, sister Mary, extended family, neighbours and friends. May he Rest in Peace.
The next meeting of the Gardening group will take place on Thursday December 12 at 8pm. in St. Canice’s Hall where each person will make a Candle Tabletop display for the Christmas table. Please remember to bring a small bit of greenery on the night, everything else will be supplied by the club.
The annual Christmas Carol Service will take place in St. Canice’s Church, Borris In Ossory on Sunday, December 22 at 7pm. Rehearsals will take place on Thursday nights December 5, 12 and 19 at 7.30pm.
A Christmas Party will take place in Ballaghmore Hall on Friday, December 20 from 7pm to 9pm. There will be disco music, fun, games, presents, food and a raffle and there will also be a visit from Santa Claus!
Borris-in-Ossory Santa Claus Club will hold a fundraising Cabaret in Rosie O’Grady’s on Saturday December 14 with music by “Loose Chippings”. Admission is €5 and tickets are available from Rosie O’Grady’s or from committee members. There will be a door prize of €30. All proceeds on the night will go towards Santa’a visit to Borris-in-Ossory.
Santa Claus will visit the PE Hall at St Joseph’s School on Sunday, December 15 at 2pm. He will have gifts for all the children. Weather permitting Santa will arrive by helicopter so it promises to be a very exciting day. An admission fee of €5 per child will be taken up on the day and a portion of this will be donated to Borris-in-Ossory Social Services .
Borris-in-Ossory Youth Club took the top award for Comedy Sketch at the Ossory Youth Mini Tops Competition, which was held in the Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny on Sunday, December 1. It was a very successful day for the club who also placed second ni the Traditional music and group performance category.
Presenter Peter Hennessy was presented with a plaque as 2nd best presenter of the day. For more see next week’s notes.
Plans are now well underway to run a Variety Concert on Saturday December 28 in Killesmeestia Hall. Admission just €5.
