Camross High Nellie Club are holding their AGM on Thursday February 20 at 8pm in the Community Hall. All are welcome.

Late Mollie Bates

The death took place on Saturday February 8 of the late Mollie Bates (nee Cass) of Laurel Hill House, Coolrain, and formerly of Ballyroan.

Mollie reposed at Laurel Hill until removal took place on Monday afternoon to St Fergals Church, Camross. The remains were received by Fr Martin Delaney who celebrated her Requiem Mass.

Chief mourners are her husband Maurice, sons Paul and Fergal, daughters Mary and Frances, grandchildren Darragh, Ashling, Joshua, Thomas, Fintan, Ella, Doreen, sister Margaret Malone, brothers Joe, Michael and Danny, daughters-in-law Deirdre and Charlotte, son-in-law Eamon McCauley, sister’s-in-law Kathleen, Chris, Anne and Maureen, brothers-in-law Andy Malone and John, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours. Late Tony Higgins

The end of era was reached when Tony Higgins of Mounthall passed away on Friday February 7. Tony was the youngest of thirteen children of Michael and Mary Phelan.

Tony lived most of his life along with his brother Tim in Mounthall and they were keen farmers. Tim passed away a few years ago and Tony continued to farm until moving to live with his nephew Peadar Burke and his wife Geraldine seven years ago. It was there that he passed away on Friday morning.

Tony had a deep interest in history and politics and with his nephews involved in sport he followed the fortunes of Camross and Laois.

Having reposed at Carrowreigh his remains were removed to St Fergals Church Camross on Sunday evening and on Monday morning PP Fr Willie Hennessey celebrated Tony’s Requiem Mass. The celebrant spoke of a devout catholic who never missed Mass when in his health and will be missed by all who knew and enjoyed his tales of history. His nephew Peadar spoke of Tony as more than an uncle who was a great man to read books and always kept up to date with goings on on TV Radio and newspapers. After Mass the remains were interred in the adjoining cemetery. Chief mourners are his sister-in-law Mary Higgins Killeen, his nephew’s extended family and many great neighbours and friends. May he rest in peace.

Late Norah Hegarty

The death took place on Sunday February 9 of Norah Hegarty (nee Scullane) of Westfield Castletown and late of Mount Callan Inagh County Clare. Norah was born on November 15 1924. The family moved to Westfield in 1962. Mrs Hegarty lost her husband in 1984 and her oldest son Martin in a road tragedy 11 years ago. Being from the Banner her great love was music, and of course in recent times she greatly enjoyed the success of the Clare hurlers. Her health began to deteriorate in recent months and she spent time in Portlaoise Hospital and Tullamore Hospital. She passed away in the wonderful care of the staff at Drominin nursing home in Stradbally. On Monday evening her remains were removed to St Edmunds Church Castletown and on Tuesday morning her Requiem Mass was celebrated by PP Fr Willie Hennessey, joined on the altar by Fr Joe Brophy & Fr Walter Cooke. After Mass the remains were taken to Churchtown Cemetery for burial. Chief mourners are her sons John Joe, James, Pat and Frances, daughters Mary Scully, Anne Stakelum, Margaret Culleton, Noreen O’Connor, Helen Doran, thirty four grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren, daughters-in-law, Catherine, Josie & Ruby, sons-in-law Peter Scully, Sean Stakelum, Sean Culleton, John Doran, Noel O’Connor, sister-in-law Brid Scullane, nieces, nephews friends & neighbours in Westfield and West Clare. May she rest in peace.


Camross GAA club & Camogie club are holding a joint Dinner Dance and medal presentation in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise on Saturday March 1. Tickets €35. Championship medals will be presented to both County champions on the night. For more information contact the committee of either clubs.
