The Abbeyleix St Patricks Day parade takes on March 17. Starts at the Heritage House at 12.30pm finishes at the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. To put a float or stall into the parade or on the street contact Caroline Cleland of Clelands Supermarkets.


Abbeyleix Business & Community Development Forum AGM will take place on Monday, March 3. All welcome.

THEATRE deferred

The Open Door Theatre’s Out of Order will not now take place on March 28 and 29.

Abbeyleix Bog

Abbeyleix bog race night in the Horse Shoe Bar on Friday, February 21 at 9.30pm. All proceeds to develop Abbeyleix bog as community amenity. Support greatly appreciated Weekly guided walks on the bog on Saturday mornings. Assemble at the Manor Hotel car park at 10.45 am. Parts of the walk are mucky at present so suitable wear suitable footwear.

Abbeyleix South NS

To enrol children in Junior Infants in the South School September 2014 - enrolment forms from the school office. Forms to be returned by midday on Tuesday, February 18. Laois week at An Grianán June 16 – 20, two members will attend. Centenary dinner dance in Abbeyleix Golf Club on February 28 at 7.30pm with music by Har Ramsbottom. Tickets from any ICA member. Members will attend table quiz in Spink. Next meeting March 4 at 8pm.


Free illustrated lecture by Mairead M Johnston, entitled From fame to failure, the Abbeyleix Carpet Factory at the Seven Oaks Hotel at 8pm on this Wednesday 19 February. Ms Johnston wroted Hidden in the pile...the Abbeyleix Carpet Factory. All welcome.

Library events

Juvenile Chess Club now on Saturday mornings. Members sought for new adult chess club every Thursday, 6pm - 7pm. Storytelling 3-6 year olds every Saturday at 11.30am. Our knitting club each Wednesday between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Next meeting of our Adult Book Club on Thursday February 13, 6pm-7pm. The book to be discussed is ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F Scott Fitzgerald. Janet O’Grady, Happy Mondays Group exhibition from Tuesday February 4 - Saturday March 1.

New Membership Charges in Laois Libraries for Third Level and PLC Students from Friday, February 7. The new fee is now €3 annually.

St Lazarians Camogie Club has entered U8, U10 & U12 competitions. Training for U6’s will also be available. We are inviting girls to join our club. Come along & give it a try on Monday 24th February @ 6.30pm in Sports Hall, Scoil Mhuire, Abbeyleix.

Late Reggie white

Condolences to the family of the late William Reginald (Reggie) White of Blairgowrie, Lower Main Street, Abbeyleix who passed away at Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaiose on Wednesday, February 5. Deeply regretted by wife Mary, children Willie, David, Florence, Suzanne, Louise and Reg, siblings Zita, Pat and Monica, extended family, relatives and large circle of friends and colleagues. Reposed at his residence. Removal to the church of the Holy Rosary for Requiem mass. Burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery.


Condolences to the family of the late Richard Lalor of Portlaoise Road, Abbeyleix and Clashmore, Waterford who died on February 9 last. Retired publican, Richard is deeply regretted by his loving wife Maureen, sons Christopher and Tony, daughters Martina and Maria, brothers, sisters, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at his residence. Removal to The Church of The Most Holy Rosary, Abbeyleix, for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in Shanahoe Cemetery. Donations if desired to the Irish Cancer Society.
