A campaign is underway to set up an Irish-speaking secondary school in Portlaoise.
‘Coiste Bunaithe Phortlaoise’ is the name of the committee set up by parents, and they are working closely with Gaelscoil Phortlaoise and An Foras Pátrúnachta.
Sarah Jane O’Leary is one of the parents campaigning.
“We parents feel passionate about our children carrying on their education through the medium of the Irish language right into second level.
“At present, the nearest schools of such kind are in Co Kildare and Co Carlow,” she said.
The project is still in the research stage, and surveys will be sent to all students in Laois to determine the level of interest.
The committee holds regular meetings and invite all members of the public to attend.
