‘Heritage Week Exhibition ‘Re-Discovering Mountmellick’ will take place in the Owenass Hall from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August. This exhibition provides an opportunity to re-discover Mountmellick in a relaxed setting. Photographs, pictures, maps, histories, stories and books are used to help us re-discover, understand and better appreciate the heritage of our town. Seating and Tea/Coffee are available. Entry is free.

‘Heritage Week Exhibition ‘For Peat’s Sake’ will take place in the Owenass Hall from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August. The exhibit includes a virtual walk-through of the Bogs of the Midlands involving a slide show, display and hands-on exhibition of peatland activities, tools, equipment and maps throughout the ages. Admission is free.
‘Heritage Week Exhibition of Mountmellick Work: An exhibition of new and old pieces of Mountmellick Work will take place in the Owenass Hall from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August. The exhibit will include new pieces by Nano’s Embroidery Group Portlaoise, Kilcavan Embroidery and Ann O’Brien, Mountmellick; and a collection of outstanding traditional work some of which has never been on exhibit before. All are welcome.
Heritage Week Social Dance will take place in the Owenass Hall on Saturday August 25 from 9.30pm to 12.30am. Old time dancing to traditional accordion player Pat Conlon and Richie Burke on keyboards. Refreshments served. €8 entry
SLIEVE BLOOM ASSOCIATION
There was a well attended meeting in the ICA House, Mountmellick on Thursday, August 16th. A minutes silence was held for former member, Johnny McKane RIP from Drummond. This year’s tour will be to Cobh, visiting the Titanic Experience, Museum, Heritage Centre and Cathedral. The bus will commence picking up in Mountmellick at 8am and will continue on through Rosenallis, Clonaslee and Kinnity. YOUR MEMORIES ARE OUR HERITAGE
Your Memories are our Heritage - too much has already been lost or forgotten. We kindly ask that anyone who has photos, memorabilia or stories relating to Mountmellick town or life in Mountmellick over the past generations bring them with them to the exhibitions taking place in the Owenass Hall on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August. We would like to make a digital archive to ensure these images and memories are preserved. All photographs, documents, etc will be scanned and returned to their owners immediately. Where possible we would like to include the names and stories behind the photos and documents. Once lost, they’re lost forever. Please help us preserve as much of the heritage of our town as possible.
Hydration and Nutrition workshop, presented by Coaching Ireland, will take place in the Owenass Hall on Wednesday 22nd August, 7-9pm. Workshop deals with the fluids and foods we need to consume or avoid for a healthy lifestyle and to perform well in sports. Admission €6. Places limited. All are welcome. The annual mass and get together takes place on Tuesday August 28 at 8.15pm in the Macra Hall. All head sponsors, members and friends are invited to attend.
The annual Padre Pio pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Sunday September 16 with the bus leaving the square in Mountmellick at 8am with pickups in Rosenallis and Killeigh. Those interested in travelling should contact Michael Lawlor at 057 8644197. The fare is €20 to be paid on booking a seat.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
Our next outing is to the races. Members of Active Retirement Ireland have been invited to The Kilbeggan race course on Friday August 24. The entrance fee has been reduced to €5 for members who show their ARI membership card at the gate. The races will be from 4.50pm to 8pm approximately and there will be music and dancing. Food will be available. There will be prizes for the best dressed woman and the best dressed man, so pull out those glad rags now and get ready for some fun. The committee of our Mountmellick Active Retirement Association wants to hire a bus to bring us to this event, (leaving the MDA at 3pm and collecting us at the race course at 9pm to bring us home) but we are still not sure how many will travel. Please tell a committee member as soon as possible if you want a seat on the bus or phone Orla 057 8697256 or 087 6950402. On Wednesday September 5 there will be a get together in the MDA (in the room over the museum) for those going on the holiday in Wexford to collect final payments and medical forms etc. There are a few places still available for this holiday in White’s Hotel Wexford from Sunday September 9 to Friday September 14.
Boccia will be in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm every Monday in August. Aqua aerobics continues in Portlaoise Leisure Centre every Tuesday at noon with the free bus leaving the MDA at 11.15am. Please note that the weekly music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital has been changed to Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm.
There are two vacant houses at present at Wolfe Tone Court. The criteria for consideration: aged 65 or over and in need of housing, living in the Mountmellick area or in adjoining parishes, or people living abroad aged 65 or over and who were formerly from the Mountmellick area.

The Rock/St Pauls retained the Minor B League when they had to come from behind to defeat Rosenallis (5-8 to 3-7) at Mountmellick on Monday August 13. Well done to all involved. The Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp takes place at The Rock this week from Monday August 20 to Friday August 24.
Coaching for u8s, u10s and u12s continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. New players are welcome.
The Junior hurlers put in a great performance on Saturday August 18 to draw with Camross. The replay will be in a couple of weeks.
LATE JOHN KINCH
There was much regret at the death of John Kinch of Lord Edward St Mountmellick on Saturday August 11. John was a well liked and held in high esteem by all who knew him and will be most sadly missed. Remains reposed at his residence until removal to St Joseph’s Church on Tuesday morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to John’s family on their bereavement.
