Dinner Dance

O’Dempseys annual dinner dance and medal presentation takes place on Saturday January 19 in the Heritage Golf and Spa Killenard, at 7.30pm sharp. St Michael’s Ac

Happy New Year to all our members! Get Fit and Active for 2013: Join a club in 2013 and get active. Beginners welcome. St Michaels AC - Adult Training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7pm in McCann Park. All levels of fitness welcome. Training sessions cost €2. New Circuit training sessions will take place indoors from Thursday January 10 at 7pm. For details contact Aidan 087-6968844.

Last Man Standing

Portarlington Town FC would like to thank everyone who entered our last man standing competition. It was a huge success for the club and congratulations to Chris Ryan of Tinnacranagh who came out the eventual winner after nine weeks.

Also big thanks to the players and other sellers around the town. Our table quiz will take place in the Barrow Lodge on Friday February 22. With the season half way through the club would like to thank our sponsors.


Over 100 adults, children and families turned out on a wonderful Christmas morning at Portarlington GAA club. €568.26 was generously donated. Many thanks to all.

It was with deep sadness that the town heard of the death of Eugene Boland Main St on Friday December 21. Eugene was known to every family in the town for his years teaching in St Joseph’s CBS. Also for his years as headmaster of the school. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (nee Davis) many years ago. He will be sadly missed by his daughters Deirdre, Mary (Les), Martina and Edel, his sons Kieran and Eugene, his eight grandchildren. Also his brother Willie (Moyglass, Co. Roscommon) and his sister Sr Catherine (Marist Convent, Sundrive Road Dublin).

Also his extended family and many friends. Eugene was originally from Annaduff Co. Leitrim. He was known for his football skills in his younger days and enjoyed sports a lot. Requiem mass took place on St Stephen’s Day at St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Paul’s old Cemetery Emo. May Eugene rest in peace.


Sympathy to the family of John (Jack) Costello Inchicore Dublin and formerly of Bracklone St who passed away at Carthage’s Nursing Home, Mucklagh Tullamore on Friday December 21. Predeased by his beloved wife Maureen (nee Ennis). Also predeceased by his brothers Patrick (Bracklone St) and James, his sisters Mary (St Brigid’s Sq) and Kathleen. Jack will be sadly missed by his brothers Tom and Michael, his brother in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Requiem mass took place on Sunday December 23 at St Michael’s Church with cremation at Mount Jerome Crematorium. May Jack rest in peace.


Deepest sympathy to the family of Kevin Coogan of Kilcoole, Wicklow. Formerly London and Station Road, Portarlington who passed away on Monday December 31. Kevin was predeceased by his parents Dan and Bridie a number of years ago. He will be sadly missed by his loving partner Catherine, daughter Aoibhinn, cousins, relatives and friends. Requiem mass took place on Thursday January 3 at St Michael’s Church, with burial afterwards to St Michael’s Cemetery. May Kevin rest in peace.


Condolences to the family of Alice Whelan (nee Ward) late of Church View and Main Street who recently passed away in England. Alice was predeceased by her husband Peter a number of years ago.

She will be missed by her daughters Katrina and Collette, and her extended family and friends. Requiem mass took place in St Michael’s Church on Thursday January 3, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Alice rest in peace.
