The parishes of Clonaslee, Killeigh, Mountmellick and Rosenallis, known collectively as the Barrow Rise Pastoral Area (Limistéar na h Eaglaise, Ardú an Bhearú), will hold an Easter Day Dawn Mass in the Festival Field, Rosenallis on Sunday Mar 31 at 6am. A choir of songsters from all the church choirs in the area will lead the singing. Torch bearers will carry an Easter Light from the seven local churches to the Easter Fire. Participants are being asked to have appropriate footwear and warm clothing, to bring a small container for Easter Water and follow the direction and advice of all the stewards on duty. All are welcome to celebrate RESURRECTION, at Easter Dawn, as we gather in prayer to honour Christ risen from the dead.


The Mountmellick Parish Novena to St Joseph will conclude with a special mass on Tuesday evening, March 19, the Feast of St Joseph, at 7.30pm. Guest speaker Ned Prendergast will reflect on “where do we find hope now?” All are welcome.

Rev Bill Olmsted, the Methodist Minister in Mountmellick, will be the special preacher in Holy Week. Everyone is welcome to join in the services. Good Friday Ecumenical Walk of Witness

Meeting at 3pm in O’Connell’s Square, everyone is invited to join with the clergy of the parish as they walk through the town and hear again the story of the first Good Friday, and celebrate this most important of Christian Festivals together while praying for the town of Mountmellick.


This year Daffodil day takes place on Friday March 22. Volunteers are needed to help out on the day. Anyone who would like to help is asked to contact Mary at 057 8624758 or Bridie at 057 8644122. Donations of fresh daffodils are also needed. All help and donations will be gratefully accepted.


Mountmellick Camera Club’s next meeting in on Wednesday March 20 at 8pm in the MDA with guest Bob Morrison FIPF ARPS from Mullingar Camera Club. Bob is a friend of the club and has given great support and advice for many years, judging their competitions with his wife Margaret. Bob will show his F panel and some A panels from other members and talk about putting a panel together. An interesting night with some inspiring photography is anticipated. The club are open for membership and new members are welcome to attend, both to meet club members and to see some great photography. Beginner’s course students are also welcome to attend.


The knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30 to noon. Bring along your knitting needles and join us for a cuppa and a chat. Our adult crossword club will meet on Thursday March 21 at 11am. All are welcome.

Internet, printing, scanning and photocopying services are available in the library. An Easter egg Hunt for children under 6 will take place on Wednesday March 27 at 11am. We are also taking bookings for a spring craft (for ages 6 to 12) which will take place on Wednesday April 3 at 11am.


Well done to teams who took part in the county quiz final in Killenard. Mountmellick’s two teams came in 2nd and 4th place. Members were Ella Livingston, John Hughes, Lyndon Livingston, Ciara Hughes, Michael Dowling, Blathnaid Connolly, Grainne Moore and Noel Stapleton.

The next outing is the county talent final in the Arts Centre, Mountmellick on Saturday March 23 from 12 -4pm approximately. Events include recitation, Drama/comedy sketch, solo/group singing and dance (Irish contemporary and modern-disco). There will be a cover charge of €2 per person. Comhaltas is holding its annual concert in the Art Centre on Friday March 22 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the committee or on the door on the night. Adults €5. Child €3. The trout fishing season opened on St Patrick’s Day. Fishing permits can be bought from Ivor Cox at Victor Cox’s shop O’Connell Square or from the water keepers Tommy Quigley and Paul Lalor. There is a bag limit of four fish and anything smaller than nine inches must be returned. Illegal dumping is still a big problem especially near bridges, please report anyone dumping to Laois County Council as they are spoiling the environment for all.


The mid Leinster quiz will take place on Sunday March 24 in Mountmellick ICA hall at 2pm, all competing are very welcome. Committee meetings take place on the second Monday of each month at 8pm in ICA Hall, all welcome including any new members who wish to join.


A fun fashion show takes place on Wednesday March 20 at 10.30am in the MDA, at the fortnightly group meeting. It will feature many of the beautiful clothes from the Hospice Charity Shop in the town. On Wednesday March 27 the Walking and Activities Group meet at the MDA at 10.30am for a walk. The annual membership fee is now due. New members are welcome to join any time.

Weekly activities for members include: Mondays Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon, free bus leaving MDA at 11.15am. On Wednesday March 20 there will be dancing with Maureen Culleton from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court. No dancing on Wednesday March 27. Thursdays music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm.


Juvenile hurling training takes place each Monday evening in the sports complex at the following times: 6.30pm to 7.30pm for u8 and 7.30pm to 8.30pm for u10 and u12. U8 football training takes place in the sports complex every Friday at 6pm. All new players are welcome to attend.

Kickboxing and Taekwondo classes for juniors, seniors and adults are held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Ladies classes are now also available. There was much sadness at the death of Denis (Duncan) Carroll of O’Moore’s Forest Mountmellick on Sunday March 3 at St Luke’s Hospital. A pleasant and friendly man, Denis will be most fondly remembered by all who knew him. Remains reposed at his residence. Funeral service was celebrated at Life Church Portlaoise at 11am on Thursday March 7 with burial afterwards to Ballyfin cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Denis’ wife Barbara, his daughters Suzanne, Fiona, Nuala, Denise and Rebecca, family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their bereavement.
