Abbeyleix House

The history of AbbeyLeix built for the De Vesci’s is the feature of a free talk by local historian Tom Cox in Portlaoise library on Tuesday, August 6 at 8pm. The foundation stone for Abbeyleix was laid in 1773. Designed by James Wyatt, the house was built for Thomas Vesey. Redesigned by Thomas Wyatt in the late 19th century, the house remained in de Vesci hands until 1995.

Centerary Book

Abbeyleix ICA are publishing a book, ‘100 years of Abbeyleix ICA’. We fully acknowledge the great support from the Leinster Express for supplying archival material and Laois Patnership who will part fund the project. They were also overwhelmed by the people’s good will in sharing precious and rare photographs. The book will be launced in November. Great stories to be told.


Fund raising dance was held recently which raised €3,268.00. Many thanks to all.

Hurling play

Heritage week: ‘Hurl’ by Carnation Theatre Group Wednesday August 21 2pm – 3:30pm (FREE) An interactive, all-ages, theatre show exploring hurling, taking place in the main hall alongside our artefacts - including an old hurl. Heritage week: A picnic with stories on Abbeyleix Bog Saturday August 24, See for times. (FREE) A picnic on Abbeyleix Bog with stories of turf cutting, the railway line and the bog’s previous military use. Skill Share and Care

Heritage Week: On Saturday August 17 and Friday August 23 2-4pm (FREE) a sharing of skills held locally, passing from generation to generation including yeast bread techniques, is presented by Pat Carey, Doon House Cookery School; all grain beer brewing, presented by members of the Abbeyleix Brewing Co-op; Bee-Keeping by members of Laois Bee-Keepers Association and; growing vegetables with Richard O’Connell from Abbeyleix GIY. late Kathleen Foyle

Condolences to the family of the late Kathleen Foyle (Nee Daly) of Knock, Abbeyliex and formerly Ballycumber, Co. Offaly who died on July 26, at St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin. Deeply regretted by her loving sons Joe, Sean and Michael, sister Eilish, brother Micheal, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Repose, Portlaoise Hospital with Removal to St. Lazarina’s Church, Knock for Funeral Mass followed by Interment in St. Brigid’s cemetery, Ballinakill.
